Access Bank Plc has dismissed viral claims circulating on social media alleging that it is preparing to shut down operations, describing the reports as false, misleading and deliberately crafted to create panic among customers and disrupt business activities.
The tier-one lender reassured customers, shareholders and the general public that it remains financially strong, stable and fully operational, adding that all its banking services and subsidiaries continue to function normally. The bank also disclosed that it is working with regulatory and security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for originating and spreading the misinformation.
Bank Reassures Customers of Financial Stability
In an official statement issued on Thursday, Access Bank said the viral message falsely portrayed itself as an authentic communication from the institution in an apparent attempt to erode public confidence.
The lender stressed that there is no truth to the reports suggesting it is winding down operations, emphasizing that its branches, digital banking platforms and other financial services remain fully available to customers across all its subsidiaries.
“We wish to reassure our customers, partners, stakeholders and the general public that Access Bank is safe, financially strong and fully operational across all our subsidiaries. Our services continue to run seamlessly, and we remain committed to serving our customers with the highest standards of excellence,” the bank stated.
Legal Action Planned Against Perpetrators
Beyond refuting the claims, Access Bank said it has begun collaborating with relevant regulatory authorities and law enforcement agencies to trace those responsible for creating and distributing the false message.
According to the bank, individuals found culpable will face legal consequences in line with existing Nigerian laws governing cybercrime and the dissemination of false information.
The bank noted that the deliberate creation and circulation of false information capable of causing panic or undermining confidence in financial institutions constitutes an offence under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
Customers Advised to Verify Information
Access Bank urged customers and members of the public to disregard the fake message and avoid forwarding it on social media or messaging platforms.
Instead, the bank advised customers to rely solely on information published through its verified communication channels before acting on any reports concerning its operations.
The lender said curbing the spread of misinformation is essential to maintaining confidence in Nigeria’s financial system and preventing unnecessary public anxiety.
Rise in Digital Misinformation
The incident adds to a growing wave of impersonation campaigns and misinformation targeting major institutions and public figures in Nigeria.
In recent months, several organisations have issued public warnings over fake announcements, AI-generated content and fraudulent messages designed to mislead the public or exploit consumer trust.
