CBN Releases ₦5.21tn Into Banking System Ahead of ₦700bn Treasury Bills Auction

.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) injected a net ₦5.21 trillion into the banking system between August 4 and August 11, 2026, as maturities of Open Market Operations (OMO) and Treasury Bills returned substantial liquidity to financial-market participants.

The sizeable release came just as the apex bank, acting on behalf of the Debt Management Office (DMO), returned to the primary market on Wednesday with a ₦700 billion Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTB) auction.

₦2.48tn Released in One Day

The largest single liquidity injection occurred on August 11, when the CBN repaid ₦2.48 trillion through maturing OMO instruments.

The repayment represented approximately 47.6% of the ₦5.21 trillion released during the week.

The remaining ₦2.73 trillion, representing about 52.4% of the total, came through primary-market repayments on August 4 and August 6. The August 4 repayment amounted to ₦2.45 trillion, while another ₦283.78 billion was released on August 6.

The repayments reflect the maturity of previously issued OMO and Treasury Bills instruments, returning funds to banks and other investors.

Liquidity Returns Ahead of NTB Auction

The latest liquidity release comes after the CBN cancelled a similarly sized ₦700 billion Treasury Bills auction scheduled for August 5.

The earlier auction was withdrawn after the apex bank conducted back-to-back OMO operations on August 3 and 4, absorbing a combined ₦4.69 trillion from the banking system.

The latest release therefore creates a markedly different liquidity environment for the rescheduled auction, with banks and institutional investors having access to additional funds ahead of the sale.

CBN Offers ₦700bn Across Three Tenors

For Wednesday’s auction, the CBN is offering ₦700 billion across three Treasury Bills maturities:

  • 91-day bills: ₦100 billion
  • 182-day bills: ₦100 billion
  • 364-day bills: ₦500 billion

The one-year instrument accounts for approximately 71.4% of the total offer, highlighting the continued emphasis on longer-dated Treasury Bills.

The securities are being offered through the Dutch auction system, with the outcome expected to provide a fresh indication of investor appetite and prevailing short-term borrowing costs.

Strong Demand Could Drive Oversubscription

The substantial liquidity released into the banking system could strengthen demand at the auction, particularly among institutional investors seeking to deploy excess cash into government securities.

Recent Treasury Bills auctions have attracted strong demand. At the July 29 auction, the CBN allotted approximately ₦1.25 trillion against an initial offer of ₦700 billion, with demand concentrated around the 364-day instrument.

At the July 8 auction, the CBN allotted about ₦1.06 trillion, while the one-year Treasury Bills stop rate rose to 17.70%, from 17.34% previously. The 182-day instrument attracted significantly weaker demand, receiving subscriptions of only ₦29.94 billion against ₦100 billion on offer.

CBN Continues Aggressive Liquidity Management

The latest injection follows an active period of monetary liquidity management by the apex bank.

During July, the CBN absorbed approximately ₦7.18 trillion from the banking system through OMO sales as it sought to manage excess liquidity and influence conditions in the money market.

The bank has subsequently alternated between liquidity mop-ups and repayments as securities mature, creating significant swings in the amount of cash available to financial institutions.

Investors Watch Yields Closely

Market participants are expected to focus on the subscription levels and stop rates emerging from Wednesday’s auction, particularly for the heavily weighted 364-day Treasury Bill.

The key question is whether the additional ₦5.21 trillion released into the financial system will translate into stronger demand and potentially lower yields, or whether institutional investors’ appetite for one-year government securities will absorb much of the available liquidity.

The auction outcome could therefore provide an important signal about the balance between liquidity conditions and investor demand in Nigeria’s fixed-income market as the CBN continues to fine-tune monetary conditions.
