Meta and the Federal Government of Nigeria have launched a new AI Academy initiative aimed at helping Nigerian startups and developers build practical artificial intelligence solutions, with selected participants set to compete for $5,000 in equity-free funding.
The programme is part of efforts to deepen Nigeria’s AI ecosystem by combining technical training, mentorship and access to funding for emerging innovators. Applications for the associated AI Academy Nigeria Pitchathon are currently open, with the application window closing on August 21, 2026.
Startups to Receive Training and Support
The initiative is designed to give participating innovators access to resources that can help them move AI ideas from early development into practical products.
The focus comes as Nigerian technology companies increasingly explore artificial intelligence for applications across business, finance, healthcare, agriculture, education and other sectors.
The partnership builds on previous collaboration between Meta and Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, including the Llama Impact Accelerator, which was launched in 2025 to support startups developing AI solutions with Meta’s open-source Llama models.
$5,000 Equity-Free Funding Up for Grabs
A major attraction of the new programme is the opportunity for participating startups and developers to compete for $5,000 in equity-free funding.
Unlike conventional venture capital, equity-free funding does not require recipients to surrender ownership of their businesses in exchange for the financial support.
The funding is intended to help promising teams develop and strengthen AI-powered solutions emerging from the programme.
Pitchathon to Identify Promising Innovators
The programme’s pitchathon component will give Nigerian startups and developers an opportunity to present their AI solutions and compete for the available funding.
The initiative is particularly targeted at innovators building solutions that can address practical challenges within Nigeria and potentially scale beyond the domestic market.
The organisers are also positioning the programme as a pathway for developers and founders to gain exposure to technical expertise and broader opportunities within the AI ecosystem.
Nigeria Pushes to Build Local AI Capacity
The Meta partnership comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to develop Nigeria’s capacity in artificial intelligence.
The government has previously introduced initiatives aimed at supporting AI research and startup development. In 2023, for example, it launched the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme, offering grants of up to N5 million to selected startup-and-researcher consortia working on AI applications in areas including agriculture, education, finance, healthcare, governance, utilities and sustainability.
The latest Meta-backed programme represents a further shift towards supporting not only research but also the development and commercialisation of AI-powered products.
