NGX Sheds ₦544.5bn as First HoldCo, Fidelity Bank Lead Sixth Straight Session of Losses

.

Nigeria’s equities market extended its recent downturn on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as renewed profit-taking in major stocks pushed the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) lower for a sixth consecutive trading session.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined by 0.35% to 241,611.23 points, while total market capitalisation dropped by approximately ₦544.5 billion, from ₦156.52 trillion to ₦155.97 trillion. The market’s year-to-date gain consequently moderated to 55.26%.

Large-Cap Stocks Bear the Brunt

The latest decline was largely driven by selling pressure in heavyweight stocks, with First HoldCo and Fidelity Bank among the biggest contributors to the market’s loss.

First HoldCo fell 5.71% to ₦132, losing ₦8 per share, while Fidelity Bank declined 6.59%. NGX Group also shed 3.83%.

Other major stocks that recorded losses included Unilever Nigeria, down 3.64%; Dangote Sugar, down 1.57%; GTCO, down 0.39%; UBA, down 0.33%; Oando, down 0.28%; and Zenith Bank, down 0.16%.

The selling pressure reflects continued efforts by investors to lock in gains after the market’s strong rally earlier in August.

Market Breadth Remains Negative

Investor sentiment remained tilted towards the sell side, with 37 stocks declining compared with 22 gainers.

At the top of the gainers’ table was HM Call, which advanced 9.97% to ₦4.84. Veritaskap gained 7.09% to ₦1.36, while Tantalizer rose 5.26% to ₦4.00.

RT Briscoe climbed 4.31% to ₦10.90, while Regal Insurance added 3.66% to close at ₦0.85.

On the other side, Red Star Express recorded the steepest decline, falling 10% to ₦16.20.

Trans-Nationwide Express dropped 9.94% to ₦2.81, while Meyer & Baker declined 9.88% to ₦15.05. Chellarams lost 9.77% to ₦9.70 and FTG Insurance fell 9.70% to ₦2.14.

Banking Index Leads Sectoral Declines

The banking sector came under the strongest pressure among the major sectoral indices.

The NGX Banking Index declined 1.82%, reflecting losses in Fidelity Bank, First HoldCo and other large financial stocks.

The Consumer Goods Index also closed lower, although marginally, declining 0.03%. The Oil & Gas Index slipped 0.01%.

Insurance stocks bucked the broader trend, with the Insurance Index gaining 0.04%, while both the Industrial Goods and Commodity indices finished flat.

Trading Activity Drops Sharply

The market’s downturn was accompanied by a substantial reduction in trading activity.

Total volume traded fell 67.69% to 429.84 million shares, while transactions worth ₦27.48 billion were executed across 35,683 deals.

Sterling Financial Holdings recorded the highest volume, with 51.57 million shares changing hands.

On the value chart, MTN Nigeria led with transactions valued at ₦9.76 billion, representing 35.50% of the day’s total market value traded.

Market Gives Back Part of August Rally

The latest decline extends the correction that began after the NGX’s strong advance earlier in the month.

The ASI had climbed to 248,529.75 points on August 10, but has since surrendered more than 6,900 points as investors increasingly take profits from positions accumulated during the rally.

Market capitalisation has also fallen back below the ₦156 trillion mark.

What Happens Next?

The immediate direction of the NGX will likely depend on whether selling pressure in heavyweight banking and consumer stocks continues or investors begin returning to the market to take advantage of lower prices.

For now, the six-session losing streak indicates that profit-taking remains the dominant force, even though the equities market continues to hold a substantial year-to-date gain of 55.26%.
