OpenAI has introduced a dedicated ChatGPT experience for teenagers aged 13 to 17, combining stronger safety safeguards with learning-focused features and additional parental controls.
Announced on August 18, 2026, the new experience is designed to give younger users access to ChatGPT’s educational and creative capabilities while applying stricter protections around content that may be inappropriate or harmful for their age group. OpenAI says users who identify themselves as 13–17, or whose accounts are estimated to belong to someone under 18, will be placed into the teen experience automatically.
Stronger Guardrails for Younger Users
The teen experience applies additional protections to sensitive areas, including graphic content, sexual or romantic interactions, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and other material considered developmentally inappropriate.
OpenAI said the safeguards are intended to reduce exposure to harmful content while allowing teenagers to continue using ChatGPT for learning, creativity, research and developing critical-thinking skills.
The company is also introducing features aimed at encouraging healthier patterns of use, including reminders to take breaks and tools that help teenagers structure their study time.
AI Designed to Support Learning, Not Just Give Answers
Education is a major component of the new teen experience.
OpenAI is expanding learning-focused features such as Study Mode, which is designed to guide students through problems and concepts rather than simply producing an answer.
The experience also includes tools such as quizzes, visual learning aids and homework reminders, with the broader objective of encouraging teenagers to understand what they are learning and develop their own problem-solving abilities.
Parents Get More Control
OpenAI is also giving parents additional tools through linked accounts.
Parents can connect their account to their teenager’s account and manage selected settings, including Quiet Hours, while receiving certain safety notifications when the system detects potentially high-risk situations.
The company has designed the system so that parents do not receive unrestricted access to their teenager’s private conversations. Instead, notifications are intended to highlight specific situations where additional offline support may be important.
Age Prediction Drives the Experience
A key part of the system is OpenAI’s age-prediction technology.
Rather than relying solely on the date of birth entered when an account is created, the company uses signals associated with an account and its usage to estimate whether a user is under 18.
If the system is uncertain, OpenAI says it takes the safer approach by applying the more protected under-18 experience. Adults who are incorrectly classified can use age-verification processes to request removal of the teen experience.
A Project Years in Development
The launch follows a series of steps OpenAI has taken to develop age-appropriate AI experiences.
In November 2025, the company published its Teen Safety Blueprint, outlining principles around age-appropriate design, stronger product safeguards, parental controls and continued safety research.
OpenAI subsequently continued developing its age-prediction system and under-18 behavioural principles before bringing the separate teen experience to ChatGPT.
The Bigger Question Around Teen AI Use
The launch reflects a broader shift in the technology industry as AI becomes increasingly integrated into teenagers’ everyday activities.
Young people are already using AI tools for schoolwork, research, creative projects and general information. OpenAI’s approach is therefore not to remove teenagers from the technology but to create an experience designed around their age and developmental needs.
However, the strategy also raises questions around how accurately AI can determine a person’s age, how much parental oversight is appropriate and how companies can protect younger users without unnecessarily compromising their privacy.
For OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teens represents a significant move towards age-specific AI design — an approach likely to influence the wider debate over how artificial intelligence should be developed and deployed for younger users.
