Google is offering eligible Nigerian students a year of free access to its paid AI service, expanding efforts to put advanced artificial intelligence tools in the hands of young people across the country.
The initiative, reported by TechCabal, gives qualifying students access to Google AI Plus for 12 months at no cost. Google values the subscription at about ₦92,400 ($68.56) for the full year.
Who Can Access the Offer?
The programme is targeted at students enrolled in accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Eligible students must be 18 years or older, while those who previously received the student offer can renew their access by completing the required student-status verification again. Verification is handled through SheerID.
The initiative is part of Google’s wider push to make advanced AI capabilities more accessible to students as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important in education and the workplace.
AI Tools Included in the Package
The Google AI Plus subscription gives students access to a range of AI-powered learning and productivity features.
Among them are Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, alongside Gemini Live, which supports real-time voice interactions, and Deep Research, designed to assist with more extensive research tasks.
Students also receive access to Study Notebooks, which can help transform learning materials into structured study resources, as well as practice quizzes and other AI-supported learning features.
The package also includes 400GB of cloud storage, giving students additional space for academic documents, projects and other digital files.
Google Targets Nigeria’s AI Skills Gap
The offer comes as Nigerian students increasingly enter an economy where AI skills are becoming relevant across technology, finance, communications, research and other sectors.
By removing the subscription cost for a year, Google is effectively lowering one financial barrier to experimenting with advanced AI tools.
The company’s broader strategy also reflects the growing competition among major technology firms to build familiarity with their AI platforms among students and future professionals.
A Second Opportunity for Some Students
Google previously introduced similar student-focused AI offers in Africa, giving eligible students access to premium AI tools for academic research, writing and creative work.
The latest programme therefore builds on an existing effort to expand AI adoption among African students rather than representing Google’s first student AI initiative on the continent.
