OPay Denies September Shutdown Rumour, Warns Customers Against Fake Notice

.

OPay Digital Services has dismissed a viral social media publication claiming that the fintech would suspend operations from September 1, 2026, assuring customers that its services remain fully operational.

The false message, which circulated widely across social media on Sunday, reportedly urged OPay customers to withdraw their funds ahead of an alleged shutdown scheduled to begin on September 1.

The claim triggered concern among some users, with reports that some customers began taking precautionary steps after encountering the publication.

OPay, however, moved to dispel the speculation through its verified communication channels, describing the purported shutdown notice as false.

“This is FALSE! OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company said in its response.

Fintech Identifies Red Flags in Viral Message

OPay urged customers and members of the public to examine the publication carefully, pointing to several inconsistencies that distinguish it from the company’s legitimate communications.

The fintech said the message contained an incorrect logo, spelling mistakes, an unfamiliar communication format and inaccurate information.

It advised customers to rely on OPay’s verified platforms when seeking information about changes to its services or operations.

“Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company said.

The incident highlights the potential impact of fabricated information targeting financial-service companies, particularly when such claims encourage customers to make immediate decisions about their money.

OPay Executive Warns Against Acting on Fake Information

OPay’s Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, Dr Maxwell Loko, separately described the publication as “false, malicious and misleading”.

Loko cautioned customers against withdrawing or transferring funds based on the unverified claim and urged the public to disregard the message.

“We urge the public to disregard this post and rely only on OPay’s verified communication channels for official information,” he said.

The executive also warned that deliberately circulating false information capable of creating panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.

OPay has not publicly identified the person or organisation behind the fabricated publication.

Shutdown Claim Comes Amid OPay Expansion

The clarification comes at a significant point for OPay, following a strong financial performance and reports of potential plans to access the capital market.

The fintech recorded a $72.47 million net profit in 2025, reversing a $50.98 million loss in 2024, while revenue climbed 161% to $536.25 million from $205.73 million.

The company has also been linked to potential plans for a listing on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), while reports have indicated that it is exploring a possible US initial public offering that could value the business at about $4 billion.

The reports have heightened attention around the fintech’s growth trajectory as it expands its payments and financial-services operations.

Customers Urged to Verify Before Acting

The latest episode adds to a growing challenge facing digital financial-service providers, where false social media posts can spread rapidly and potentially influence customer behaviour.

For OPay users, the company has made clear that there is no planned shutdown or September break and that its operations remain active.

The fintech is consequently urging customers to verify claims through its authenticated communication channels before taking action based on messages circulating online.

The company’s position is clear: the viral September 1 shutdown notice did not originate from OPay, and customers should disregard it.
