African accounting technology company Tyms has introduced a new integration that allows businesses to connect their accounting records directly to AI assistants including ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, enabling users to analyse financial information and perform selected bookkeeping tasks through conversational commands.
The company said the new Tyms MCP server, built around the Model Context Protocol (MCP), gives businesses a way to interact with their financial records through AI while retaining controls over what the assistant can access and change.
The development marks another step in the integration of generative AI with business software, as companies increasingly look beyond AI for content generation and begin using conversational systems to interact with operational data.
AI Assistants Can Access Live Financial Records
Through the integration, businesses can connect their Tyms accounts to supported AI assistants and ask questions about their finances using ordinary language.
Users can request information such as their current balance sheet, outstanding invoices, expense categories and other financial details.
The responses are generated from the company’s actual ledger data rather than from manually exported spreadsheets or older reports, giving business owners access to more current financial information through the AI interface.
Tyms said the read-access capability covers accounts, contacts, invoices, bills, expenses, income and inventory, as well as financial reports including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash-flow reports, trial balances and ledgers.
Businesses Can Also Perform Accounting Tasks
The integration goes beyond simply reading financial information.
Businesses that activate the write functionality can instruct their AI assistant to perform selected accounting actions, including creating invoices, recording payments, adding expense accounts, restocking inventory and converting quotations into invoices.
According to Tyms, its AI accounting agent, Adam, handles the underlying accounting logic to ensure transactions are properly recorded rather than simply treated as text generated by an AI system.
Importantly, the company said every write operation requires confirmation from the user before changes are made to the books.
Security Controls Built Into Access
Because accounting systems contain sensitive financial information, Tyms has placed restrictions around how AI assistants interact with customer data.
Access is authorised through OAuth and limited to a specific business account. Tyms said API keys are not transmitted through ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity.
Customers can also choose between read-only access and read-and-write permissions, while access can be withdrawn when necessary.
The company said the read-only option is intended to allow businesses to begin using AI for financial analysis without immediately giving the system permission to alter accounting records.
Tyms also said it holds ISO 27001:2022 certification and a SOC 2 Type 2 report, credentials that could be particularly relevant to accounting firms and larger businesses handling sensitive client financial information.
Targeting Small Businesses in Emerging Markets
Tyms believes the integration could be particularly valuable to small businesses in markets where access to professional accounting expertise remains limited.
The company serves businesses across Africa, North America and Europe, with its leadership arguing that many small businesses still manage financial information through informal systems because professional bookkeeping can be expensive or difficult to access.

The approach could allow business owners to obtain financial insights without needing extensive accounting knowledge or having to navigate complex software interfaces.
Accounting Software Moves Into AI Assistants
The launch reflects a broader shift in business software, with AI assistants increasingly becoming interfaces through which users access and perform work across different applications.
Rather than requiring users to log into separate accounting systems for every task, integrations such as Tyms MCP allow financial information and selected workflows to be accessed from an AI conversation.
For accountants and bookkeeping professionals managing multiple businesses, the technology could also reduce time spent carrying out routine checks across different accounting platforms, potentially leaving more time for financial analysis and advisory work.
Tyms MCP Now Available to Existing Customers
Tyms said its MCP integration is currently available in production to existing customers and works with Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI clients that support remote MCP with OAuth.
The company is positioning the technology as part of its broader effort to combine conventional double-entry accounting with AI-powered bookkeeping, reconciliation and financial reporting.
The development signals a growing convergence between accounting software and conversational AI, with the potential to make financial information more accessible to business owners while placing greater emphasis on permission controls, verification and responsible use of AI in financial operations.
