Standard Bank Targets Bigger Share of Africa’s Digital Payments Market

.

Standard Bank, Africa’s largest lender by assets, is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the continent’s rapidly expanding digital payments market as electronic transactions become increasingly central to commerce and financial services.

The South African banking group is looking beyond its traditional role as a lender, seeking to deepen its position in the infrastructure through which businesses and consumers move money across African markets.

The strategy comes as digital payments continue to expand across the continent, creating opportunities for established banks to compete with fintechs and other payment providers for transaction flows, merchant relationships and associated financial services.

Payments Become Strategic Growth Area

Standard Bank’s ambitions are backed by the scale of its existing payments business.

The group processed more than R164 trillion in payments in 2025, covering about 2.3 billion individual transactions. Its cross-border payment flows also increased by 12% during the year, highlighting the growing importance of payment infrastructure to its broader African operations.

Rather than treating payments simply as a transactional service, the bank increasingly views the segment as a way to strengthen relationships with customers and generate additional revenue from the movement of money.

The expansion of digital payment channels is also giving banks access to transaction data that can support other financial products, including lending and cash-management services.

Competing in a Crowded Digital Market

Standard Bank’s push puts it in competition with a growing ecosystem of African fintechs and digital-payment companies that have built businesses around faster and more convenient ways to transfer and receive money.

Banks across the continent are increasingly responding by developing their own digital platforms while partnering with fintech companies and payment infrastructure providers.

Standard Bank has previously partnered with fintech companies, including Flutterwave, to expand access to digital payments and related services across several African markets.

The bank’s strategy reflects a wider shift in African financial services, where the competition is increasingly moving beyond deposits and loans to control of the digital infrastructure underpinning everyday transactions.

Africa Offers Room for Expansion

Standard Bank’s extensive African footprint gives it a significant base from which to pursue the opportunity.

The group operates across more than 20 African countries, giving it access to markets with different levels of digital-payment adoption and financial inclusion.

Its recent investment decisions also point to a broader strategy of deepening its presence in markets it considers to have strong growth potential.

The bank injected an additional $80 million into its Tanzania operations in July and plans to increase its stake in Standard Bank Angola from 51% to 75% during the second half of 2026. Standard Bank has identified both countries as important growth markets.

Digital Payments Could Drive Future Banking Growth

Standard Bank’s renewed focus on payments comes as the bank expects stronger growth in its African banking operations during the second half of 2026.

The lender reported a 10% increase in half-year headline earnings to R26.1 billion for the six months ended June 2026. Its group net interest income rose 4% to R53.2 billion, while management expects easing interest-rate pressures and expanding loan portfolios to support further growth.

For Standard Bank, however, the opportunity extends beyond traditional lending.

As African consumers and businesses increasingly move from cash and conventional banking channels to instant, mobile and embedded payments, control of the payment rails could become an increasingly valuable competitive advantage.

The bank’s challenge will be to convert its existing scale and infrastructure into a digital payments business capable of competing with faster-moving fintechs while maintaining the reliability, security and regulatory standards expected of a major financial institution.

With digital transactions becoming an increasingly important part of Africa’s economic activity, Standard Bank appears determined to ensure that more of those payment flows pass through its network.
