Airtel Nigeria Surpasses 17,000 Cell Sites as Network Expansion Accelerates

.

Airtel Nigeria has crossed the 17,000-cell-site milestone, strengthening its nationwide network as the telecommunications operator continues to invest heavily in expanding connectivity and adding capacity across underserved communities.

The operator is now approaching the 18,000-site mark, following the addition of more than 1,000 sites annually and a broader expansion programme that has taken its network to all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.

The latest expansion represents a significant increase from Airtel’s roughly 15,000 sites two years ago. By early 2026, the company had already exceeded 17,000 sites after adding approximately 2,000 sites over the two-year period.

More Than 1,000 Sites Added

Airtel Africa’s latest annual report shows that its Nigerian operation added more than 1,050 new sites during the 2025–26 financial year.

More than 99% of Airtel Nigeria’s sites are 4G-enabled, as the company continues to upgrade existing infrastructure while deploying new sites to meet rising demand for mobile voice and data services.

The expansion is increasingly reaching communities that have historically had limited access to telecommunications infrastructure.

Among the locations benefiting from the rollout are Kukawa in Borno State, Okomu-Udo in Edo State, Chimbi in Niger State, Orile Ijaiye in Oyo State, Kopii in Benue State and Aran-Orin in Kwara State, alongside other rural and semi-urban communities.

Focus Shifts Beyond Major Cities

Airtel has indicated that a significant portion of its network investment is directed towards deep-rural communities, smaller towns and areas on the outskirts of major cities.

The strategy reflects the increasing importance of extending reliable connectivity beyond Nigeria’s major commercial centres, particularly as digital services become more important to everyday economic activity.

Airtel Nigeria CEO Dinesh Balsingh said earlier this year that the company planned to maintain the pace of network expansion throughout 2026, stressing that digital connectivity should extend to people living in rural areas and smaller communities.

The operator’s growing footprint could provide residents and businesses in such locations with improved access to mobile communications, internet services and digital platforms.

Connectivity Supports More Than Communication

The network expansion has implications beyond the ability to make calls or browse the internet.

Improved mobile coverage can help businesses communicate with customers and suppliers, while giving households greater access to digital banking, education, healthcare and government services.

For entrepreneurs operating outside major cities, stronger connectivity can also make it easier to participate in digital commerce and reach customers beyond their immediate locations.

The development comes at a time when Nigeria’s digital economy is increasingly dependent on reliable telecommunications infrastructure, with growing demand for mobile data, digital payments, online services and other internet-based activities.

Airtel Builds Toward 18,000 Sites

With more than 17,000 sites now deployed, Airtel’s next milestone is likely to be the 18,000-site threshold as the operator continues its nationwide rollout.

The pace of deployment also highlights the scale of infrastructure investment required to keep up with Nigeria’s growing demand for connectivity.

As Airtel continues adding and upgrading sites, the effectiveness of the investment will ultimately be measured not only by the number of towers deployed, but by the quality, availability and reach of the services delivered to customers across the country.

For Nigeria’s digital economy, however, the expansion represents another step towards extending reliable connectivity to communities that have historically remained at the edge of the country’s telecommunications network.
