Ride-hailing company Bolt is expanding its support for driver-partners in Nigeria through discounted health insurance plans that also cover their immediate family members, as rising healthcare costs place additional pressure on working households.
The initiative, introduced earlier in 2026 in partnership with Bastion Health, is designed to make healthcare more affordable for eligible drivers while reducing the financial shock that can accompany unexpected medical needs.
According to Bolt, the programme gives qualifying driver-partners and their immediate family members access to a range of healthcare services through Bastion Health’s provider network.
Tackling the Cost of Medical Care
For many ride-hailing drivers, income from driving supports entire households. A medical emergency can therefore create a double financial strain, with healthcare expenses increasing at the same time that illness could prevent a driver from working.
Bolt said this reality informed its decision to broaden its focus on driver welfare beyond earning opportunities.
Teddy Appa-Dankyi, Senior General Manager, Bolt West Africa, said the company believes supporting driver-partners should include measures that contribute to their wider wellbeing and household stability.
He noted that many drivers are primary providers for their families, making access to healthcare an important part of their financial security.
Family Coverage Included
Under the programme, eligible drivers can obtain discounted health insurance while extending coverage to their immediate family members.
Bolt said the arrangement is intended to remove some of the barriers that prevent working families from accessing quality healthcare when medical needs arise unexpectedly.
The company also views the initiative as a way of giving drivers greater peace of mind while they remain on the road earning an income.
Part of Broader Driver Support
The health insurance offering represents a broader approach to driver-partner support, moving beyond the traditional focus on flexible work and earnings.
Bolt said the programme recognises the close relationship between a driver’s health and ability to earn, particularly for those responsible for supporting dependants.
The company has encouraged eligible driver-partners interested in the scheme to obtain further information and enrol through the Bolt Reward section of the Driver app.
As healthcare costs continue to challenge Nigerian households, Bolt’s initiative highlights an increasingly important issue for gig-economy workers: protecting income also requires protecting the health of the people whose livelihoods depend on that income.
For Bolt, extending discounted insurance to drivers and their families is an attempt to address that gap while strengthening its broader welfare offering to the platform’s driver community.
