MTN Unveils Y’ello Street Museum to Mark 25 Years of Connectivity in Nigeria

.

MTN Nigeria has launched the Y’ello Street Museum, an immersive public exhibition in Lagos documenting the company’s 25-year journey and the broader transformation of communication, technology and digital life in Nigeria.

The museum, located beneath the Falomo Bridge in Lagos, was unveiled as MTN marks its silver jubilee in Nigeria. The walk-through experience traces the evolution of mobile connectivity across five generations of network technology, from 1G to 5G, while bringing together technology, culture and personal experiences from the past quarter-century.

Rather than focusing solely on MTN’s corporate history, the exhibition places its evolution within the wider changes experienced by Nigerians as mobile and internet connectivity became increasingly embedded in everyday life.

From 50,000 Subscribers to a Digital Economy

Visitors begin the exhibition in 2001, the year MTN commenced operations in Nigeria with approximately 50,000 subscribers.

Among the items featured are iconic mobile devices, including the Nokia 3310, alongside campaign materials, cultural memorabilia and other artefacts that capture different stages of Nigeria’s telecommunications journey.

The exhibition follows the progression from basic voice and SMS services to increasingly sophisticated mobile networks, demonstrating how each generation of connectivity opened new possibilities for communication and digital participation.

The journey also captures the changing ways Nigerians access information, consume entertainment, discover talent, build businesses, learn and maintain relationships.

Technology Meets Culture

The museum combines telecommunications history with some of the cultural moments that have defined the last 25 years.

Entertainment, music, storytelling and entrepreneurship feature alongside technological developments, illustrating how connectivity has helped Nigerian creatives and businesses reach audiences beyond their immediate locations.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, said the exhibition was designed to show the human impact of technological advancement, rather than simply present a timeline of network upgrades.

According to her, the experience allows visitors to reconnect with devices, entertainment and other moments that formed part of their personal journeys while highlighting how connectivity created opportunities for learning, entrepreneurship and broader participation in the digital economy.

A Tribute to Nigerians

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, described the museum as a tribute to the millions of Nigerians who have contributed to the company’s journey.

He said customers, government and regulatory stakeholders, employees, partners and communities have all played roles in shaping the progress celebrated through the exhibition.

The initiative consequently presents MTN’s 25-year history as part of a broader Nigerian story—one in which telecommunications has increasingly influenced how people live, work and conduct business.

Connectivity and Nigeria’s Digital Transformation

The exhibition also highlights the economic and social impact of the transition from basic mobile communication to high-speed connectivity.

As networks developed, connectivity created opportunities across sectors including financial inclusion, education, entertainment, entrepreneurship and commerce.

The evolution of mobile technology has also supported the growth of Nigeria’s creative economy, allowing artists, performers and digital creators to distribute their work to increasingly wider audiences.

For businesses, improved connectivity has supported digital services and new ways of reaching customers, while individuals have gained access to information and services that were previously more difficult to obtain.

Museum Opens to the Public

The Y’ello Street Museum will be open to the public for seven days, giving visitors an opportunity to explore the milestones and experiences associated with Nigeria’s 25-year connectivity journey.

By combining old devices and telecommunications artefacts with cultural memories and stories from everyday life, MTN is using the exhibition to reflect on how far Nigeria’s digital ecosystem has come and to encourage visitors to consider what the next phase of connectivity and innovation could bring.

The exhibition ultimately presents the evolution of telecommunications not simply as a story about faster networks, but as a transformation that has reshaped how Nigerians communicate, create, learn, work and participate in the economy.
