NGX Rises 0.10% as Banking Stocks Lift Market on Dangote Refinery IPO Launch

.

The Nigerian equities market opened the week on a positive note, with the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) gaining 0.10% on Monday, September 14, 2026, as banking and other heavyweight stocks helped the market extend its recovery despite a broader decline in the number of advancing stocks.

The modest rebound came on the same day the much-anticipated Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals IPO opened for subscription, placing the domestic equities market under heightened investor attention.

The benchmark index advanced 246.50 points, rising from 243,052.74 to 243,299.24 points, while total market capitalisation increased by approximately ₦159.8 billion, closing at ₦157.75 trillion compared with ₦157.59 trillion at the previous session.

The gain extended the NGX’s positive run to a fourth consecutive trading session, lifting its year-to-date return to 56.35%.

Banking Stocks Provide the Lift

The banking segment was among the key drivers of Monday’s performance, helping offset weakness across a larger portion of the market.

The positive contribution from financial heavyweights underscores the continued influence of banking stocks on the direction of the Nigerian market, particularly as investors reposition portfolios amid major corporate and capital-market developments.

Other large- and medium-capitalisation stocks, including Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Exchange Group, First HoldCo, Custodian Investment and Dangote Sugar Refinery, also recorded gains, supporting the index despite the relatively narrow breadth of the session.

The market’s performance therefore reflected a familiar pattern in which gains in highly capitalised companies can lift the headline index even when a greater number of individual stocks close lower.

Market Breadth Turns Negative

Despite the ASI’s advance, market breadth weakened significantly.

A total of 28 stocks declined, compared with 19 gainers, signalling that the market’s headline improvement was not broad-based.

This represented a reversal from Friday’s positive breadth and suggests that investors remained selective, concentrating buying interest in particular large-cap stocks rather than taking positions across the wider market.

The divergence between the rising index and negative breadth is important because it indicates that Monday’s gain was driven more by the performance of heavyweight stocks than by an across-the-board improvement in investor sentiment.

Trading Activity Slows

Trading activity also moderated during the session.

The NGX recorded 428.97 million shares traded, representing a 22.41% decline from the 552.89 million shares recorded in the previous session.

Turnover also fell, with the value of transactions dropping 20.42% to ₦20.52 billion, from ₦25.79 billion previously.

However, the number of deals increased substantially. The exchange recorded 54,592 transactions, up 19.51% from 45,678 deals in the preceding session.

The combination of lower volume and turnover but higher deal count points to increased transaction activity without a corresponding rise in the overall value of shares changing hands.

Dangote Refinery IPO Adds Market Spotlight

Monday’s market performance coincided with the opening of the Dangote Refinery IPO, one of the most significant capital-market transactions in Nigeria’s recent history.

Dangote Group is offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, targeting approximately ₦2.15 trillion, or $1.6 billion, in what is expected to become Africa’s largest IPO. The refinery is valued at roughly ₦63 trillion ($47.6 billion) under the offer structure.

The IPO has also been designed to broaden retail participation, with investors able to subscribe for as few as 10 shares, requiring a minimum investment of ₦5,250.

The offering is scheduled to run until October 13, while trading in the shares is expected to commence later in November.

The transaction could become an important catalyst for Nigeria’s capital market by bringing a major energy asset directly to public investors and potentially attracting a new wave of retail participation.

Market Recovery Continues Despite Selective Buying

The latest gain marks another step in the market’s recovery following recent volatility.

The ASI’s year-to-date return has now reached 56.35%, compared with 56.19% at the previous close.

However, the negative market breadth and lower trading value show that investors remain cautious despite the index’s strong cumulative performance.

The Dangote Refinery IPO could further influence market dynamics in the coming weeks as investors assess whether to commit fresh funds to the landmark offer or adjust existing equity positions to accommodate it.

For the NGX, the immediate challenge will be sustaining the recovery while converting the enormous public attention surrounding the refinery IPO into deeper and broader participation across the Nigerian capital market.

Monday’s 0.10% gain may appear modest, but coming alongside the launch of Africa’s biggest IPO, it marks the opening of a potentially consequential period for Nigeria’s equities market.
