VFD Microfinance Bank has appointed Nonso Kenneth Okoye as its new Managing Director, bringing more than two decades of banking and financial services experience to the leadership of the institution.
The bank announced the appointment on August 26, 2026, through its official LinkedIn page, as it seeks to strengthen growth, innovation and customer-focused financial services.
Okoye joins VFD Microfinance Bank after spending more than 20 years with Standard Chartered Bank, where he held several leadership positions across banking operations, strategy and corporate finance.
From Financial Analyst to Senior Banking Executive
Okoye began his banking career at Standard Chartered in 2004 as a Financial Analyst and subsequently rose through various positions within the institution.
Before leaving the bank in December 2025, he served as Chief Operating Officer, Corporate & Investment Banking Coverage in Cameroon, marking the culmination of a career spanning more than two decades.
His professional background combines financial services experience with technical and accounting qualifications. Okoye holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and is also a Chartered Accountant.
New MD Targets Customer Experience and Innovation
VFD Microfinance Bank said Okoye’s experience and strategic leadership would support what it described as a new phase of growth and innovation.
The bank said it expects his leadership to create greater value for customers as the institution continues to develop its operations.
Okoye, in his response to the appointment, said his immediate focus would be to build on the institution’s existing progress while improving customer experience and pushing innovation across the business.
Leadership Change Comes Amid Group Growth
The appointment comes as VFD Microfinance Bank continues to contribute to the performance of VFD Group.
The microfinance bank recorded N1.15 billion in profit before tax in 2025, making it one of the group’s significant subsidiaries during the period.
Other major contributors included HEREL Limited, VFD Group’s real estate and hospitality business, with N5.8 billion in pre-tax profit; Anchoria Asset Management, with N2.6 billion; and VFD Tech, which generated N1.29 billion.
VFD Group Posts Strong H1 2026 Performance
Okoye’s appointment also comes against the backdrop of stronger financial performance by VFD Group in the first half of 2026.
According to the group’s unaudited consolidated and separate financial statements for the six months ended June 30, 2026, gross earnings rose 30.5% year-on-year to N53.71 billion.
Profit before tax increased by 98.4%, while profit after tax more than doubled, climbing 100.8% to N10.06 billion.
Investment and similar income also grew by 30.2% to N49.13 billion, accounting for more than 91% of the group’s gross earnings and underscoring the importance of investment income to its business model.
What the Appointment Means
Okoye’s arrival gives VFD Microfinance Bank a leader with extensive experience in international banking, corporate finance and operational management at a time when Nigeria’s financial services industry is undergoing rapid digital and competitive change.
The immediate task will be to translate that experience into stronger customer services, continued innovation and sustainable growth for VFD Microfinance Bank, while supporting the broader expansion of the VFD Group.
For the bank, the leadership transition signals an attempt to combine its existing digital-finance capabilities with deeper institutional banking experience as it positions for its next phase of growth.
