Starlink Launches in Equatorial Guinea, Expanding African Footprint to 30 Markets

SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service has officially launched in Equatorial Guinea, making the country the company’s 30th African market as the low-Earth-orbit broadband provider continues its rapid expansion across the continent.

Starlink became available in Equatorial Guinea on August 29, 2026, following confirmation from the company and its founder, Elon Musk. Residents can now order the service through Starlink’s website, opening the door to satellite-powered broadband access for households and businesses across the country.

However, the launch comes with a regulatory caveat. Starlink is currently operating under a provisional approval, meaning its long-term status in the country has yet to be determined.

Government Puts Starlink on Trial

Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, granted Starlink provisional approval on July 29, 2026, exactly one month before the service went live.

The rollout is being overseen by GITGE, the state-owned company responsible for managing the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.

GITGE is expected to monitor Starlink’s performance and operations during the provisional period before determining the regulatory framework that will govern the service on a longer-term basis.

This means the current launch should not necessarily be interpreted as an unrestricted or permanent market entry.

The government could still impose additional requirements or modify the conditions under which Starlink operates following the assessment.

From Strategic Connectivity to Consumer Access

Starlink’s relationship with Equatorial Guinea predates the latest launch.

The satellite provider was already being considered in March 2026, largely as a potential connectivity solution around Pope Leo XIV’s planned visit to the country in April.

Under the country’s previous regulatory arrangement, access to Starlink was largely restricted to the oil and gas sector and other strategic infrastructure, while ordinary consumers required government authorisation to use the service.

The emergence of a public consumer ordering platform represents a significant shift.

It suggests authorities are now testing whether satellite broadband can play a wider role in the country’s connectivity ecosystem, although GITGE’s review will ultimately determine the future scope of that access.

Starlink Targets Connectivity Gaps

The launch could be particularly relevant to communities where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited.

Equatorial Guinea had approximately 1.18 million internet users at the end of 2025, equivalent to about 60.4% internet penetration.

While the figure means a significant portion of the population is already online, connectivity remains uneven, particularly in areas where deploying fibre-optic or conventional mobile infrastructure is technically difficult or commercially expensive.

Starlink’s network of low-Earth-orbit satellites offers an alternative because it does not require a conventional last-mile terrestrial connection to reach customers.

That could make the technology useful for remote communities, businesses and strategic facilities that remain underserved by traditional networks.

Affordability Remains a Major Question

Greater availability, however, does not necessarily translate into mass adoption.

Starlink requires customers to purchase compatible equipment and pay recurring subscription fees, potentially making the service more expensive than some conventional broadband options.

For Equatorial Guinea, the challenge will therefore be determining whether satellite internet can move beyond being a connectivity solution for relatively well-funded users and become a practical option for a broader section of the population.

The question is particularly important in countries where household incomes can limit the ability of consumers to absorb the upfront cost of satellite equipment.

30th African Market for Starlink

Equatorial Guinea’s launch forms part of Starlink’s aggressive expansion across Africa.

By June 2026, the company was operating in 26 African countries and had accumulated approximately 300,000 subscribers across the continent.

Its commercial footprint increased to 28 markets by July, before Equatorial Guinea became the 30th African country to gain access.

The pace of expansion has also exposed capacity challenges in some markets, with demand in certain countries growing faster than the network’s available capacity.

That dynamic illustrates both the appetite for Starlink’s service and the infrastructure challenges that come with rapidly scaling a satellite broadband network.

Governments Face New Regulatory Challenge

Starlink’s growing presence is also forcing African governments to reconsider how satellite internet providers should be regulated.

Unlike conventional telecom operators, satellite companies can potentially provide connectivity across national borders without relying on the same extensive physical infrastructure required by traditional operators.

This creates new questions around licensing, spectrum management, data governance, competition and national security.

Equatorial Guinea’s decision to begin with provisional approval and a government-led assessment reflects the cautious approach some African governments are taking as they determine how satellite broadband should fit into their national telecommunications strategies.

Expansion Is No Longer the Only Question

For Starlink, entering Equatorial Guinea represents another milestone in its effort to build a continent-wide satellite broadband network.

But as the company reaches more African markets, the bigger questions are shifting.

The issue is increasingly not whether Starlink can enter another country, but whether governments can develop workable regulatory frameworks, whether consumers can afford the service and whether satellite connectivity can meaningfully reduce Africa’s persistent digital divide.

Equatorial Guinea’s provisional rollout could provide an important test of that model.

If the service performs well and regulators are satisfied, the country could move towards a more permanent Starlink framework. If affordability, capacity or regulatory concerns become significant, the terms of its operation could change.

For now, Starlink has secured another foothold in Africa but its long-term place in Equatorial Guinea’s digital infrastructure remains subject to the government’s review.
