Flutterwave Builds Multi-Rail Stablecoin Strategy to Reshape Cross-Border Payments in Africa

.

Flutterwave is stepping deeper into the stablecoin economy as the African fintech giant builds a multi-rail payment infrastructure designed to make cross-border transactions faster, more flexible and less dependent on traditional banking channels.

The company’s strategy goes beyond simply allowing customers to hold or transfer digital currencies. Flutterwave is integrating stablecoins into the underlying infrastructure that powers its payments and remittance products, combining blockchain networks, dollar-backed digital assets, local currencies and technology partners to facilitate money movement across African markets.

Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value against traditional currencies, particularly the US dollar. For African businesses dealing with multiple currencies and lengthy international settlement processes, they offer a potential alternative route for moving and settling funds.

Flutterwave’s growing investment in the technology signals a broader shift in the continent’s payments industry, where fintech companies are increasingly exploring blockchain-based settlement as a way to tackle foreign-exchange friction, high transaction costs and delays associated with conventional cross-border payments.

From Payment Processor to Stablecoin Infrastructure

Flutterwave’s approach is notable because stablecoins are being positioned as a backend payment rail rather than simply a consumer-facing cryptocurrency product.

The company has been assembling the infrastructure through a series of partnerships. Its stablecoin offering supports assets including USDC, USDT and Ripple’s RLUSD, while its technology stack connects different blockchain networks to its existing payment infrastructure.

Flutterwave has also partnered with blockchain infrastructure provider Turnkey and global banking platform Nuvion to provide embedded stablecoin wallets, allowing merchants and users to manage stablecoin balances alongside traditional currencies.

This means businesses can potentially receive payments through local channels while using dollar-backed digital assets for settlement and treasury management.

Flutterwave says its stablecoin infrastructure is designed to reduce settlement delays, extend payment capabilities beyond traditional banking hours and give businesses greater control over liquidity.

Multiple Blockchain Rails

Rather than committing to a single blockchain, Flutterwave is pursuing what can be described as a multi-rail strategy.

In 2025, the company announced an integration with Polygon to facilitate stablecoin-powered cross-border settlements across more than 30 African countries.

In 2026, Flutterwave expanded this strategy through a partnership with Tempo, a payments-focused Layer 1 blockchain. The partnership is designed to add another settlement route for stablecoin transactions across Flutterwave’s Send App and Flutterwave for Business platforms.

The multi-rail model gives Flutterwave the ability to route transactions according to factors such as transaction costs, speed and the requirements of individual payment corridors, rather than relying on one blockchain for every transaction.

The company’s developer documentation currently supports stablecoin transactions involving USDC, USDT and RLUSD across networks including Solana, Ethereum, Base and Polygon.

Send App and Businesses at the Centre

Flutterwave’s stablecoin strategy extends across both consumer remittances and enterprise payments.

Its Send App is designed to facilitate transfers between Africans in the diaspora and recipients across the continent, while Flutterwave for Business serves merchants and enterprises handling international payments.

The company’s stablecoin infrastructure could allow these products to use blockchain settlement behind the scenes while recipients continue receiving funds through familiar local payment channels.

That distinction is important.

For most businesses, the attraction of stablecoins is not necessarily holding cryptocurrency. It is the possibility of moving value internationally more quickly and settling transactions in a dollar-linked asset before converting into local currency when necessary.

Flutterwave itself has described the model as combining stablecoins such as USDC, USDT and RLUSD with its existing payment rails, allowing businesses to access faster settlement without fundamentally changing how recipients receive money.

Why Stablecoins Matter for African Payments

Cross-border payments remain one of Africa’s major financial infrastructure challenges.

Businesses operating across several countries often have to navigate different currencies, banking systems, foreign-exchange markets and settlement timelines. These challenges can tie up working capital and increase the cost of doing business.

Stablecoins offer another route because transactions can move on blockchain networks rather than passing entirely through conventional correspondent-banking structures.

Flutterwave’s strategy therefore reflects a larger industry movement toward using blockchain technology not necessarily to replace existing financial systems, but to improve the settlement layer underneath them.

The company has already moved beyond experimentation. Its products now support stablecoin balances and transfers, while its partnerships indicate plans to make blockchain settlement an increasingly important component of its wider payments infrastructure.

Regulation Remains a Critical Test

The expansion also comes with regulatory considerations.

Stablecoin adoption across Africa is developing at different speeds, with countries taking varying approaches to digital assets, foreign exchange, payments and financial-service licensing.

For Flutterwave, the challenge will be ensuring that faster blockchain-based settlement remains compatible with local regulations covering customer identification, anti-money-laundering controls, consumer protection, foreign-exchange rules and reporting requirements.

This makes the company’s infrastructure approach particularly significant. Rather than operating a standalone crypto platform, Flutterwave is attempting to integrate stablecoins into an established payments ecosystem.

The Bigger Picture

Flutterwave’s stablecoin push points to a broader evolution in African fintech: the competition is increasingly shifting from who can simply process payments to who can build the infrastructure underneath those payments.

With Polygon, Tempo, Turnkey, Nuvion and other technology partnerships forming parts of its expanding ecosystem, Flutterwave is effectively building multiple routes through which money can move across borders.

The company’s bet is that stablecoins can become a practical settlement layer for African commerce, remittances and treasury operations—not as a replacement for local currencies or banks, but as an additional piece of the financial infrastructure connecting them.

If that model scales successfully, stablecoins could move from being primarily associated with the cryptocurrency industry to becoming a largely invisible component of how businesses and consumers move money across African borders.

For Flutterwave, the strategic objective is clear: make the blockchain work behind the scenes while the customer experiences simply a faster, more efficient payment system.
