The Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, is set to redefine the future of technology-driven education in Nigeria with the deployment of a 10Gbps dedicated smart campus network, a project described as a major leap towards building a digitally enabled higher education ecosystem.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, has commended the initiative, describing the project as a transformative development that will strengthen innovation, research and technology adoption within the institution.

The smart campus project, developed through a partnership between MAPOLY and the Advanced Technological Incubation and Research Center (ATIRC), represents the first deployment of an enterprise-grade 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) dedicated broadband network by a public tertiary institution in Ogun State and one of the first of its kind among Nigerian public higher institutions.

A New Era for Digital Learning and Research

The 10Gbps network is designed to provide high-speed, secure and low-latency connectivity across the campus, creating an environment capable of supporting advanced technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, robotics, data science, cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Beyond internet connectivity, the project is expected to serve as a digital foundation for smart classrooms, e-learning platforms, collaborative research and emerging technologies such as digital twins and extended reality solutions.

The initiative is positioned as a model for future-ready educational institutions seeking to integrate technology into teaching, research and entrepreneurship.

Olowu Applauds Innovation-Focused Initiative

Speaking on the importance of the project, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom praised MAPOLY and ATIRC for investing in infrastructure that aligns with the changing demands of the global technology ecosystem.

The monarch noted that access to advanced digital infrastructure would provide students, researchers and entrepreneurs with opportunities to compete globally while encouraging innovation within the institution.

A major component of the smart campus initiative is the embedded ATIRC Innovation Programme, which will operate as a technology incubation and research hub within the institution.

ATIRC’s Head of Research and Innovation, Bashirat Bamigboye, said the project goes beyond broadband deployment, describing it as a national innovation environment where emerging technologies can be developed and scaled.

She explained that the infrastructure would support advanced research activities while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.

Driving Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

The smart campus network is expected to provide the technical foundation required for advanced computing activities, including AI development, cybersecurity research, robotics experimentation and data-driven innovation.
