Consumer Goods Selloff Drags NGX Lower as Investors Lose N1.76trn

.

Nigeria’s equities market extended its recent decline on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as intensified selling pressure on consumer goods stocks and several large-cap counters erased about N1.76 trillion from the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) market capitalisation.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell 1.12% to 243,967.09 points, compared with 246,723.57 points recorded in the previous session. Market capitalisation consequently dropped from N159.26 trillion to N157.49 trillion.

The latest downturn marks the second consecutive session of losses after the benchmark reached a record 248,529.75 points on Monday, meaning the index has now shed roughly 4,563 points from that peak.

Consumer Goods Lead Market Decline

Consumer goods stocks bore the brunt of Wednesday’s selloff, with the NGX Consumer Goods Index plunging 4.93% to 4,106.48 points from 4,319.51 points.

BUA Foods was the biggest drag among the heavyweight stocks, dropping by the maximum 10% to N760.60 from N845.10, representing a N84.50 decline per share.

Unilever Nigeria followed a similar path, losing 9.97% to close at N131.40 from N145.95, while UAC Nigeria declined 2.86% to N170.

The scale of the losses suggests that investors are continuing to realise profits accumulated during the market’s strong rally, particularly in highly capitalised stocks.

Banking Stocks Also Under Pressure

Selling pressure was not limited to consumer-facing companies, as major banking stocks also recorded declines.

Access Holdings fell 3.01% to N27.40, while United Bank for Africa (UBA) declined 2.15% to N45.45. Zenith Bank slipped 1.34% to N124.80, while GTCO recorded a smaller 0.23% decline to N128.50.

The banking sector’s weakness contributed to the broader market retreat as investors continued to reassess positions following the strong gains recorded in recent sessions.

However, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) bucked the banking-sector trend, rising 9.93% to N71.40 from N64.95 and adding N6.45 per share.

Some Large-Caps Buck the Trend

Despite the broad selloff, a number of major stocks closed higher.

Nestlé Nigeria advanced 1.82% to N2,800, while Nigerian Breweries gained 0.71% to N70.50. Transcorp also appreciated by 1.20% to N38.

Across the wider market, International Energy Insurance led the gainers, climbing 10% to N4.40 from N4.00. ETI, Trans-Nationwide Express, Computer Warehouse Group and Cornerstone Insurance also posted gains of 9.93%, 9.77%, 9.74% and 6.80%, respectively.

At the other end, BUA Foods, Unilever Nigeria, John Holt, AVA Capital and Austin Laz & Company were the five biggest decliners, with losses ranging from 8.81% to 10%.

Insurance Provides Some Support

Sectoral performance remained predominantly negative, although the insurance sector offered some relief.

The NGX Banking Index declined 0.30% to 2,560.67 points, while the Industrial Index dropped 0.42% to 10,457.71 points.

In contrast, the NGX Insurance Index gained 0.71% to 1,152.13 points, making it the strongest-performing sector during the session.

The Oil & Gas Index edged up 0.02% to 5,238.56 points, while the Commodity Index remained unchanged at 1,743.53 points.

Profit-Taking Continues After Record Rally

Wednesday’s decline reinforces the emerging correction in the domestic equities market after the benchmark index reached a record level earlier in the week.

The concentration of losses in consumer goods and banking heavyweights indicates that the downturn was largely driven by profit-taking rather than an across-the-board retreat from Nigerian equities.

With the market still carrying substantial gains from its 2026 rally, investor sentiment in the coming sessions could hinge on whether selling pressure in consumer goods and banking stocks persists or fresh buying interest emerges in the large-cap counters that fuelled the recent advance.

For now, the N1.76 trillion reduction in market value underscores the intensity of the latest profit-taking wave and leaves the NGX facing its second straight session of losses.
