Airtel, Starlink Launch Africa’s First Commercial Satellite-to-Phone Service in DRC

.

Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink have launched a satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking the first commercial deployment of the technology in Africa.

The service is designed to extend mobile connectivity to locations beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial networks, allowing compatible smartphones to connect through Starlink satellites without the need for a satellite dish or other specialised equipment.

The DRC becomes the first Airtel Africa market where Starlink Mobile has moved from testing into commercial deployment, potentially opening a new route to connectivity for communities and users in areas where traditional mobile infrastructure is limited.

From Kenya Tests to Commercial Deployment

The launch follows a strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX announced in December 2025.

Under the partnership, the companies have been working to extend satellite-to-mobile connectivity across Airtel Africa’s markets.

The technology was subsequently tested in Kenya in March 2026, with Airtel and Starlink testing mobile data and messaging capabilities before moving towards commercial deployment in the DRC.

The DRC deployment now provides the first commercial test of the technology on the continent and is expected to provide Airtel with practical experience ahead of a potential expansion into other markets.

Connecting Phones Beyond Cell Towers

Unlike conventional Starlink broadband, the satellite-to-mobile service is designed to connect directly with compatible mobile phones.

Users in covered areas with a clear view of the sky can access basic connectivity without installing a satellite terminal.

The initial service supports SMS and selected light-data applications, including WhatsApp, allowing users to maintain basic communication even where conventional mobile networks are unavailable.

The technology could be particularly useful in remote communities, where the cost or difficulty of deploying traditional telecommunications infrastructure has historically limited network coverage.

Airtel Targets Africa’s Connectivity Gap

For Airtel Africa, the deployment represents more than an additional network technology.

The operator is seeking to address connectivity gaps across a continent where large rural and hard-to-reach areas remain difficult to serve economically using conventional towers and fibre infrastructure.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar described the DRC deployment as an important milestone for the company and its partnership with SpaceX.

The company said experience gained from the DRC rollout would help inform the potential expansion of the service across its other markets, subject to individual countries’ regulatory approvals.

Potential Applications Beyond Everyday Messaging

The satellite-to-mobile service could have implications for more than individual smartphone users.

The technology is expected to be useful for organisations and workers operating in areas with limited terrestrial coverage, including transport operators, humanitarian organisations, health workers, farmers and mining operations.

It could also provide an additional communications option during emergencies, natural disasters or temporary disruptions to conventional telecommunications infrastructure.

For businesses operating in remote locations, maintaining basic communication can be critical to coordinating workers, managing operations and responding to emergencies.

Regulation Remains Key to Expansion

Although the DRC launch represents a major step for Airtel and Starlink, expansion into other African markets will depend on regulatory approvals in each country.

Airtel Africa operates across multiple African markets, but telecommunications and satellite services are subject to country-specific licensing and regulatory requirements.

The DRC experience will therefore serve as an important test of how satellite-to-phone technology can complement existing mobile networks while meeting local regulatory and operational requirements.

The commercial launch signals a shift in Africa’s connectivity landscape, where satellites are increasingly being considered not simply as an alternative to terrestrial broadband, but as an extension of conventional mobile networks.

For millions living beyond reliable cellular coverage, the success of Airtel and Starlink’s DRC deployment could determine how quickly that satellite-enabled connectivity model spreads across the continent.
