Nigeria’s Next Corporate Giants Need Better Pathways to Growth Capital

.

Nigeria has a growing pool of businesses with the potential to evolve into major corporate institutions, but limited access to appropriately structured financing remains a key hurdle to moving from rapid growth to sustainable scale.

Across sectors, Nigerian companies are recording stronger revenues, expanding operations and pursuing new markets. Yet as these businesses grow, their capital requirements become more complex, creating a need for financing options that can support expansion without constraining future growth.

From Retained Earnings to Sophisticated Capital

For many companies, expansion initially depends on retained earnings and bank borrowing. As their ambitions increase, businesses may turn to private equity, strategic investors and eventually public markets.

The experience of established Nigerian groups such as Dangote and BUA illustrates how businesses can progressively expand their capacity, strengthen their institutions and gain access to more sophisticated sources of capital over time.

The challenge now is creating similar pathways for the emerging companies that could become Nigeria’s next generation of corporate champions.

NGX Growth Board Opens Earlier Route to Capital

The capital market could play a greater role in that transition through the Growth Board of Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

Introduced in 2020, the Growth Board was designed to give smaller, expanding businesses an opportunity to access the capital market without having to wait until they reach the size of established blue-chip companies.

Its Entry Segment caters to companies with market capitalisation between ₦50 million and ₦500 million, a minimum free float of 10% and at least 25 shareholders.

The Standard Segment, meanwhile, covers companies with market capitalisation from ₦500 million to ₦4 billion, requiring a 15% free float and at least 51 shareholders.

Businesses seeking admission to the Standard Segment through the established-business route must also demonstrate at least 20% cumulative revenue growth over the preceding two years and appoint a Designated Adviser.

Investor Appetite Is Growing

Recent market performance suggests investors are becoming increasingly receptive to companies outside Nigeria’s traditional blue-chip universe.

The NGX All-Share Index gained 51.19% in 2025, while total equity-market capitalisation increased by more than ₦36 trillion to ₦99.38 trillion.

The Growth Index performed even more strongly, surging 257.81%, from 7,762.86 points to 27,776.22 points during the year.

The performance indicates that businesses with credible growth prospects, strong fundamentals and attractive valuations can command investor attention beyond the country’s largest listed corporations.

MeCure Shows What Graduation Can Look Like

MeCure Industries offers an example of how the Growth Board can support a company’s development.

The pharmaceutical company joined the Growth Board in November 2023, while still in a significant expansion phase.

By 2025, MeCure’s revenue had risen 69% year-on-year to ₦77.69 billion, while profit after tax jumped 177% to ₦6.46 billion.

Its subsequent growth has taken its market capitalisation well beyond the threshold associated with the Growth Board’s Standard Segment.

The trajectory demonstrates an important principle: a successful growth market should ultimately produce companies capable of outgrowing the segment in which they started.

Capital Alone Cannot Deliver Scale

Access to funding, however, is only one part of building a large and sustainable company.

As businesses expand, they must strengthen their financial reporting, corporate governance, board oversight, disclosure practices and internal decision-making systems.

For companies seeking to become national or continental champions, institutional credibility becomes increasingly important alongside capital.

A public listing can contribute to that process by exposing businesses to a wider pool of investors while increasing expectations around transparency and shareholder accountability.

Building the Financing Ecosystem

The broader financing ecosystem also has an important role to play.

Issuing houses, investment banks, stockbrokers, accountants and legal advisers can help growing businesses determine which form of capital is most suitable at different stages of their development.

A company may rely on bank financing at one stage, private capital at another and public equity later as its funding requirements increase.

The Growth Board adds another option to that financing spectrum by giving eligible businesses a route into the capital market while they are still scaling.

Creating Tomorrow’s Corporate Champions

Not every high-growth company will need to become publicly listed, and the capital market will not necessarily be the right financing option at every stage.

However, businesses with strong fundamentals and ambitions to operate at national or continental scale could benefit from being introduced to the capital market much earlier in their development.

The bigger opportunity for Nigeria, therefore, is to develop a stronger pipeline connecting emerging companies, investors, advisers and market institutions.

If that bridge is built effectively, more businesses that are successful today could gain the capital, governance structures and investor base required to become tomorrow’s major Nigerian corporate institutions.
