Egypt Completes Africa’s First 6GHz Mobile Trial, Records 1.7Gbps Per User

Egypt has taken another step towards next-generation mobile connectivity after Telecom Egypt, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and Huawei successfully tested mobile services on the 6GHz spectrum, recording data speeds of about 1.7Gbps per user.

The trial, announced on August 18, 2026, involved activating a mobile base station on the 6GHz band and completing a data call over the spectrum. NTRA described it as the first successful African trial of mobile services using the upper 6GHz band, positioning Egypt among early adopters exploring additional spectrum for future high-capacity networks.

Trial Demonstrates High-Capacity Potential

The test achieved approximately 1.7 gigabits per second for a single user, demonstrating the potential of the band to deliver higher throughput and additional capacity in areas experiencing heavy network traffic.

The result should not, however, be interpreted as an indication that consumers will immediately receive 1.7Gbps mobile speeds. Rather, the demonstration provides technical evidence of what the spectrum could potentially support when appropriate equipment, devices and commercial deployments become available.

NTRA said the trial forms part of its efforts to assess emerging technologies and determine how spectrum resources can be used to accommodate the continued growth of mobile-data consumption.

6GHz Enters Egypt’s Long-Term Spectrum Plans

The regulator is already looking beyond the immediate 5G rollout.

NTRA Executive President Mohamed Shamroukh said the 6GHz band is among the strategic frequency ranges being considered under Egypt’s long-term national spectrum plan for 2030–2035.

The objective is to ensure that sufficient spectrum is available as mobile networks evolve and applications requiring large amounts of data become more widespread.

Potential applications include artificial intelligence, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented and virtual reality, as well as other data-intensive services.

Building on Egypt’s 5G Expansion

The 6GHz experiment comes as Egypt continues to expand its 5G infrastructure.

The country commercially launched 5G services in June 2025, following earlier trials, while its mobile operators have continued receiving additional spectrum to expand network capacity.

Egypt’s official mobile spectrum roadmap for 2026–2030 includes further assignments in bands such as 3.5GHz, alongside existing 2.6GHz spectrum, as operators build out their next-generation networks.

The latest 6GHz test therefore represents another layer of Egypt’s longer-term strategy rather than a replacement for the spectrum already supporting 4G and 5G services.

Why More Spectrum Matters

Mobile networks face a straightforward constraint: demand for data continues to increase, while usable radio spectrum remains limited.

Video streaming, cloud services, AI applications and connected devices are all increasing the amount of data that networks must carry.

Additional high-capacity spectrum could give operators more room to handle that traffic, particularly in densely populated areas where existing network resources can become congested.

The 6GHz band is consequently being examined as a potential future capacity layer for advanced mobile networks.

Telecom Egypt and Huawei Partner on Test

Telecom Egypt conducted the trial in collaboration with Huawei under the supervision of NTRA.

The operator said the experiment reflects its strategy of testing emerging technologies ahead of the requirements of future generations of mobile networks.

Telecom Egypt’s Chief Executive Officer Tamer El-Mahdi said the company intends to continue exploring technologies capable of strengthening its digital infrastructure and preparing for future customer demand.

Commercial Deployment Still Requires Regulatory Decisions

Despite the successful technical demonstration, the trial does not mean commercial 6GHz mobile services are about to launch across Egypt.

Regulators still have to determine how the spectrum should be allocated, managed and potentially shared with other users and services.

The testing gives NTRA practical information that can feed into those future decisions, particularly as the regulator develops its longer-term spectrum strategy.

For Egypt, the significance of the exercise therefore extends beyond the 1.7Gbps result. Early testing gives the country an opportunity to understand the capabilities and limitations of the band before making decisions that could shape mobile-network capacity through the next decade.

As African countries prepare for rising demand from AI, cloud computing and other data-heavy technologies, Egypt’s 6GHz experiment could provide an early indication of how additional spectrum may help the continent’s networks prepare for the next phase of connectivity.
