Mukuru Targets Everyday Payments in Botswana as Fintech Expands Beyond Remittances

.

African fintech Mukuru is expanding its payments offering in Botswana, seeking to turn customers’ mobile phones into everyday financial tools as it moves beyond its traditional remittance business.

The company is positioning its Mukuru Wallet as a broader digital-finance platform, allowing customers to send and receive money, make payments and manage funds directly from their phones.

The expansion comes as Mukuru looks to deepen its presence in Botswana’s payments market and address the gap between widespread mobile-phone access and the continued reliance on cash for everyday transactions.

From Remittances to Daily Spending

Mukuru built its business around international money transfers, connecting customers sending funds across African and other international corridors.

In Botswana, however, the company is increasingly positioning its wallet as a tool for routine financial activities rather than simply receiving remittances.

Customers can use the Mukuru Wallet to send money to other mobile numbers in Botswana, receive funds, purchase airtime and electricity, and pay DStv bills.

The company also allows customers to send and receive money locally and internationally through the wallet, extending its role from a transfer service into a broader payments platform.

Mukuru Adds Card Payments

A major part of the expansion is the introduction of a Visa-branded Companion Card linked directly to the Mukuru Wallet.

The card allows customers to spend money from their wallet balance at merchants that accept Visa, without first transferring funds into a conventional bank account.

The offering is designed to bring the wallet into physical retail and everyday spending, including purchases such as groceries and transport, while also supporting online payments.

Customers can manage the wallet and card through their mobile phones, potentially reducing the need to visit cash-out locations for routine transactions.

Phone Becomes the Financial Hub

Mukuru’s strategy reflects a broader shift among African fintech companies towards making the mobile phone the main interface for financial services.

Its Botswana wallet can already be accessed through digital channels including WhatsApp and USSD, allowing customers to transact without relying exclusively on a smartphone application.

The company’s Botswana platform also supports money transfers, bill payments and other services from the phone, while its broader network allows funds to be sent to bank accounts and mobile wallets.

This approach could be particularly relevant in markets where consumers may have access to mobile connectivity without having the same level of access to traditional banking infrastructure.

Financial Inclusion Remains a Key Opportunity

Mukuru’s expansion is also taking place against the backdrop of Botswana’s relatively high mobile penetration.

The company and industry reports have pointed to the country’s extensive mobile connectivity alongside continued gaps in formal financial access.

That creates an opportunity for fintech providers to use mobile-based financial products to bring payments, transfers and other services closer to consumers who may not use conventional bank accounts for everyday transactions.

Mukuru says its wallet is intended to give customers greater control over their money while allowing them to transact from wherever they are.

Security Becomes More Important

As Mukuru moves deeper into everyday payments, security becomes increasingly important because the wallet can hold funds as well as facilitate transactions.

The company provides security measures including PIN protection and advises customers to secure their phones and wallet credentials.

Its Botswana wallet also has transaction limits, with individual handset transactions capped at P10,000, daily transactions at P15,000 and monthly aggregate transactions at P30,000.

Mukuru also advises customers to immediately secure or block their wallet if their phone is lost, stolen or compromised.

A Wider African Payments Strategy

The Botswana expansion fits into Mukuru’s broader evolution from a specialist money-transfer company into a wider financial-services provider.

The company currently operates across multiple African markets and says it serves more than 17 million customers, with more than 320,000 pay-in and payout locations across its network.

Its services increasingly cover different stages of the consumer payments journey, including sending money, receiving funds, storing value and making everyday payments.

That puts Mukuru in competition with a growing group of African fintechs and mobile-money providers seeking to capture more of consumers’ daily financial activity.

Competition in Botswana’s Digital Payments Market

The expansion also means Mukuru will have to compete for a greater share of everyday transactions rather than relying primarily on its established position in remittances.

The introduction of a wallet-linked card gives the company another route into retail payments, while its existing remittance network provides a customer base from which it can expand.

For consumers, increased competition could mean more options for moving and spending money digitally.

For Mukuru, however, the challenge will be turning customers who primarily use its services for receiving or sending money into regular users of its wider financial ecosystem.

Mukuru’s Bigger Bet

Mukuru’s Botswana strategy reflects a wider trend in African fintech: companies that began by solving specific problems such as cross-border transfers are increasingly trying to become full-service financial platforms.

In Botswana, the company is betting that customers will want to do more with their money once it reaches their phones from paying bills and buying airtime to making purchases through a linked card.

The long-term opportunity is therefore bigger than remittances.

If Mukuru can make its wallet a regular part of consumers’ financial lives, the phone could become the primary gateway through which its Botswana customers receive, store, transfer and spend money.
