Bujeti Launches AI Agents to Automate Finance Work for African Businesses

.

Nigerian fintech Bujeti is expanding its business-finance platform with the launch of AI agents designed to automate routine financial work, marking a new phase in the company’s push to become a broader financial operating system for African businesses.

The Y Combinator-backed fintech is moving beyond its original focus on corporate cards and expense management to deploy artificial intelligence across everyday finance operations, including processing financial documents, following up on unpaid invoices and handling other repetitive tasks.

The move comes as businesses increasingly look to AI not only for generating information but also for carrying out defined tasks across financial workflows. Bujeti’s latest product direction positions the company within that emerging shift towards agentic AI, where software can perform multi-step activities with less manual intervention.

From Corporate Cards to an AI Finance Layer

Bujeti began by helping African businesses issue corporate cards, control employee spending and manage expenses through a central platform.

Its product has since expanded to include budgeting, expense tracking, approval workflows, payroll, tax management, payment processing, reconciliation and accounting integrations.

The company’s evolution reflects a broader attempt to bring multiple financial functions into one environment rather than requiring businesses to manage spending, payroll, payments and reporting through separate systems.

Bujeti’s current platform is positioned as a finance control centre for African businesses, while the new AI capabilities add an automation layer on top of those existing financial workflows.

AI Agents Take On Routine Finance Tasks

The newly launched AI agents are designed to handle repetitive activities that traditionally require finance teams to spend considerable time reviewing documents, checking transactions and communicating with customers or suppliers.

Among the use cases is financial-document processing, allowing businesses to automate parts of the work involved in handling finance-related documents.

The agents can also follow up on unpaid invoices, helping businesses pursue outstanding receivables without requiring finance staff to manually track every payment and initiate every reminder.

The broader objective is to reduce the amount of routine administrative work handled by finance teams while allowing employees to concentrate on activities requiring human judgement and oversight.

Bujeti Targets the African Finance Gap

The product expansion addresses a wider challenge facing businesses across Africa, where financial management can involve fragmented tools, manual processes and limited access to sophisticated finance infrastructure.

Bujeti’s platform is designed for businesses across sectors including healthcare, logistics, agriculture and construction, where controlling expenditure and maintaining visibility over company finances can be particularly important.

The company’s original platform allowed businesses to issue cards to employees and contractors while imposing spending limits, restrictions and approval processes.

It has since built additional functionality around those transactions, including automated reconciliation and reporting.

Building Towards a Virtual CFO

Bujeti’s AI strategy forms part of a larger ambition to provide African businesses with what it describes as a virtual CFO capability.

The company’s leadership has argued that while payment infrastructure has become increasingly digital, financial management remains fragmented for many businesses.

Bujeti wants to bring budgeting, payments, payroll, expenses and financial decision-making into a single environment, with AI increasingly responsible for handling routine processes.

The company has described its longer-term goal as becoming a platform where businesses can meet their major financial needs without constantly switching between different systems.

AI Moves Into the Finance Back Office

Bujeti’s launch comes as AI adoption expands from customer-facing applications into the back office, where businesses manage invoices, payments, reconciliations, payroll and financial records.

That shift is significant because finance operations involve large volumes of structured information and repetitive workflows that can potentially be automated.

However, finance automation also requires controls around accuracy, permissions and accountability. AI systems handling financial processes need to operate within defined rules, particularly where their actions can affect company records, payments or customer relationships.

Bujeti’s strategy therefore places AI inside existing financial workflows rather than treating it simply as a standalone chatbot or information tool.

A Broader Push Into Business Finance

The latest development follows several product expansions by Bujeti during 2026.

The fintech launched payroll functionality in May, allowing businesses to process employee salaries from the same dashboard used to manage expenses and payments.

The company has also continued expanding its finance-management capabilities as it seeks to provide a unified platform for African businesses.

Its AI launch consequently represents another step in the same direction: moving from simply recording financial activity to helping businesses execute and automate parts of that activity.

The Race for Africa’s AI-Powered CFO

Bujeti is not alone in exploring AI agents for finance. Globally, financial-technology companies are developing agentic systems capable of handling accounts payable, receivables, payments and other finance workflows.

What distinguishes Bujeti’s approach is its focus on African businesses and its existing infrastructure for corporate spending and financial management.

The company now has an opportunity to use that existing financial data and workflow infrastructure to make AI more deeply embedded in day-to-day business operations.

For African companies, the bigger question will be whether AI agents can move beyond simple automation to become reliable tools for managing financial operations, improving visibility and supporting better decision-making.

Bujeti’s latest launch represents a significant step in that direction as the fintech attempts to evolve from a corporate spending platform into an AI-powered financial operating system for African businesses.
