MTN Targets 30 Million Nigerian Fintech Users as Group Pushes Beyond Telecoms

.

MTN Group is targeting a six-fold expansion of its fintech customer base in Nigeria, with the telecommunications giant seeking to grow users of its financial services from about 5 million to 30 million.

The ambition reflects MTN’s broader strategy of transforming its fintech business into a major growth engine alongside its traditional telecommunications operations. Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita disclosed the target as the company continues to expand its digital financial services across its markets.

From 5 Million to 30 Million Users

MTN currently has approximately 5 million fintech customers in Nigeria, but the company believes the market offers considerable room for expansion.

Its target of 30 million users would represent a sixfold increase and would significantly expand the reach of MTN’s financial-services ecosystem.

The company is seeking to leverage its large telecommunications customer base, digital infrastructure and established distribution network to bring more Nigerians into its fintech offerings.

Fintech Becomes a Strategic Growth Engine

The push comes as MTN increasingly looks beyond traditional voice and data services for new sources of growth.

Across Africa, telecom operators have been expanding into financial services, using their large subscriber bases to distribute payments, wallets and other digital financial products.

For MTN, the fintech opportunity is particularly significant because Nigeria has a large and increasingly digital population, alongside a financial system where mobile-based services continue to gain ground.

The company’s strategy is therefore to use its existing telecommunications footprint as a launchpad for deeper participation in digital finance.

Nigeria Remains a Key Market

Nigeria occupies an important position in MTN’s wider African fintech strategy because of the size of its population and the scale of its digital economy.

The country also has a highly competitive financial technology market, with banks, fintech startups and telecommunications companies competing for customers across payments and other digital financial services.

Reaching 30 million users would put MTN’s fintech operations at a significantly larger scale and strengthen its position in that competition.

Scale Could Drive Wider Financial Inclusion

The proposed expansion could also increase access to digital financial services for customers who are underserved by traditional banking channels.

MTN’s extensive mobile network and distribution infrastructure give it the ability to reach customers beyond major commercial centres, while mobile-based financial products can provide users with alternatives to conventional banking channels.

However, converting a much larger portion of its telecommunications customer base into active fintech users will require more than simply making the services available. Adoption will depend on convenience, reliability, pricing and customer trust.

Competition Remains Intense

MTN’s 30 million-user ambition comes against the backdrop of an increasingly crowded Nigerian fintech market.

Digital banks, payment companies and incumbent financial institutions have all expanded their mobile offerings, making customer acquisition and retention increasingly competitive.

MTN’s advantage lies in its enormous existing customer ecosystem and physical distribution reach. The challenge will be turning that scale into sustained financial-services engagement.

The Bigger Picture

MTN’s plan to move from 5 million to 30 million fintech users signals how important financial technology has become to the group’s long-term growth strategy.

The target is ambitious, requiring MTN to add roughly 25 million additional users to its Nigerian fintech ecosystem.

If achieved, the expansion would substantially change the scale of MTN’s financial-services business in Nigeria and reinforce the broader shift among African telecom operators from connectivity providers into diversified digital-service companies.

For MTN, the next challenge is turning its vast telecommunications reach into meaningful and recurring financial-services usage and proving that fintech can become as important to its Nigerian growth story as mobile connectivity has been.
