Visa Upgrades A2A Protect With AI-Powered Fraud Detection for Banks

.

Visa has enhanced its A2A Protect fraud-prevention solution with real-time risk intelligence and a new unified fraud score designed to help financial institutions detect account-to-account fraud before funds leave customers’ accounts.

The upgrade combines Visa’s payments network intelligence with technology from Featurespace, the artificial intelligence company Visa acquired, giving banks additional tools to identify suspicious transactions earlier while reducing unnecessary fraud alerts.

Visa announced the enhanced solution as account-to-account payments continue to expand globally, increasing the need for financial institutions to identify fraudulent transfers before they become difficult or impossible to reverse.

New Fraud Score Brings Risk Signals Together

At the centre of the upgrade is a new unified fraud score that provides financial institutions with a clearer indication of the risk associated with an account-to-account transaction.

The feature represents Visa’s first in-market integration of Featurespace technology since the acquisition, bringing the companies’ capabilities together in a product designed specifically to support real-time fraud detection.

Visa said the enhanced A2A Protect can help institutions identify fraudulent activity faster while also reducing the number of legitimate transactions incorrectly flagged as suspicious.

The company said the solution has demonstrated the ability to increase fraud detection by 75% within the first six months of deployment, while reducing unnecessary fraud alerts by more than 40%.

AI Gives Banks Faster Access to Fraud Intelligence

A2A Protect uses artificial intelligence and transfer-learning techniques to provide banks with risk intelligence without requiring them to wait months for their own transaction data to generate sufficiently mature fraud models.

This gives financial institutions access to broader intelligence from the outset, rather than requiring each bank to develop its fraud-detection capabilities independently.

The approach is particularly relevant as account-to-account payments become increasingly important to the global payments ecosystem.

Visa estimates that A2A transactions will exceed 5.8 trillion by 2028, representing a 160% increase from 2024.

As transaction volumes grow, fraudsters also have more opportunities to exploit instant and increasingly interconnected payment systems.

Banks Can Share Network-Level Intelligence

The upgraded system also gives participating financial institutions the option to use network-level intelligence to identify broader patterns of fraudulent activity.

Where banks opt into the intelligence-sharing capability, A2A Protect can highlight emerging scam hotspots and coordinated fraud activity that may be difficult for an individual institution to identify from its own transactions alone.

This broader view can help financial institutions recognise threats earlier and respond to fraud patterns spreading across different parts of the payments ecosystem.

Visa said the additional intelligence can support the identification of scams before transactions are authorised, giving banks an opportunity to intervene before funds move.

Simpler Integration for Financial Institutions

Visa has also designed the solution to work with existing banking systems through a single API, potentially reducing the complexity and time required for implementation.

Another feature is the explanation provided alongside fraud alerts.

Rather than simply flagging a transaction, the system gives fraud teams a plain-language explanation of why a payment was considered risky. Visa says this can help investigators make faster decisions while limiting disruption to genuine customers.

The emphasis reflects a growing challenge for financial institutions: improving fraud detection without creating so many false alerts that legitimate customers and transactions are unnecessarily blocked.

Visa Expands Its Fraud-Fighting Arsenal

The A2A Protect enhancement forms part of Visa’s broader push to strengthen security across the digital payments ecosystem.

The company’s acquisition of Featurespace has allowed it to incorporate additional AI-driven fraud detection capabilities into its products, with A2A Protect becoming the first in-market offering to combine the two companies’ technologies.

The strategy comes as financial institutions face increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes that can move rapidly between payment channels.

For banks, relying solely on historical transaction patterns or internally generated data may make it harder to identify coordinated attacks that span multiple institutions.

The Bigger Payment Security Challenge

The growth of instant account-to-account payments is creating a trade-off for financial institutions: customers expect transactions to be fast and seamless, while banks need enough time and information to determine whether a payment is legitimate.

Visa’s approach is to move more of the fraud assessment into the transaction process itself, giving institutions real-time risk signals before funds leave an account.

James Mirfin, Visa’s Head of Risk and Security Solutions, said fraudsters are moving quickly across payment types and financial institutions therefore need access to risk intelligence at a similar speed without unnecessarily slowing legitimate payments.

The enhanced A2A Protect is designed to address that gap by combining real-time intelligence, AI-based analysis and network-level signals.

As digital payments continue to scale, the ability to identify fraudulent transactions before money moves could become increasingly important for banks and their customers.

For Visa, the latest upgrade also demonstrates how its acquisition of Featurespace is being translated into payment-security products, while positioning A2A Protect as another layer of defence against the growing risks surrounding instant account-to-account payments.
