South African AI Startup Verascient Raises $1.2m to Build Enterprise AI Infrastructure

.

South African artificial intelligence startup Verascient has secured $1.2 million (about R19.5 million) in an oversubscribed seed funding round as it develops infrastructure designed to help businesses organise their internal data and make it more useful to AI systems.

The funding, announced on August 24, 2026, attracted a mix of international and local investors, including Founder Collective, Andrena Ventures, Cambridge Enterprise and Summit Ventures. Angel investors Alan Knott-Craig and Shayne Mann also participated in the round.

The investment comes as companies increasingly adopt AI tools but struggle with a fundamental problem: much of the information needed to make those systems effective remains scattered across documents, emails, spreadsheets, meetings and internal software.

Turning Corporate Knowledge Into AI-Ready Context

Verascient is building a platform designed to bring that fragmented information together.

Its technology uses a temporal knowledge graph to organise company information while maintaining details about its history, source and access permissions.

The distinction is important because corporate information is rarely static. Policies change, business relationships evolve and decisions are made over time. Verascient’s system is designed to preserve that context rather than treating every piece of information as an isolated data point.

The objective is to give AI agents access to an organisation’s accumulated knowledge so they can perform tasks using the company’s existing context instead of starting from scratch whenever a new instruction is issued.

Targeting Data-Heavy Industries

The startup is initially focused on sectors including financial services, insurance and logistics, industries where businesses typically accumulate large volumes of operational data and institutional knowledge.

Much of that knowledge can remain fragmented across legacy systems or reside informally with employees who understand how particular processes work.

Verascient combines its software platform with AI engineering support, working with companies to identify inefficient processes and develop AI-powered workflows and agents around them.

Its proposition is that enterprise AI adoption requires more than giving employees access to general-purpose AI assistants.

Companies also need the underlying infrastructure that connects those tools to accurate, relevant and authorised organisational information.

AI Infrastructure Attracts Investor Interest

Verascient’s funding comes amid growing investor interest in AI infrastructure across Africa.

African startups raised approximately $1.36 billion during the first half of 2026, compared with $1.44 billion during the same period in 2025. However, funding has increasingly been concentrated among a smaller number of companies.

Against that backdrop, Verascient’s oversubscribed seed round is significant, particularly given the participation of international investors.

The deal also points to a growing appetite for African startups building technology infrastructure around AI rather than simply creating consumer applications powered by existing AI models.

Startup Plans to Expand Engineering Team

Verascient intends to deploy the new capital toward expanding its engineering workforce and improving its technology as it increases the number of enterprise deployments.

Co-founders Keagan Stokoe and Emile Ferreira are also seeking to recruit highly skilled AI engineers in South Africa, with the company targeting what they describe as the country’s top 1% of AI talent.

The hiring strategy reflects the technical demands of building enterprise AI infrastructure, where reliability, security, data access and integration with existing systems are critical.

From South Africa to a Global Enterprise Market

Although Verascient was founded in South Africa, its target market extends beyond the country’s borders.

The problem the company is attempting to solve — fragmented corporate knowledge and the difficulty of connecting that information to AI — affects businesses across markets and industries.

If its technology can successfully help enterprises turn their internal information into reliable context for AI agents, the startup could position itself within a rapidly expanding global enterprise AI infrastructure market.

The Bigger Picture

The latest funding highlights a broader shift in how businesses are approaching artificial intelligence.

As companies move from experimenting with chatbots to deploying AI agents capable of carrying out operational tasks, access to accurate organisational data is becoming increasingly important.

Verascient is betting that the next stage of enterprise AI adoption will depend not just on increasingly capable models, but on the infrastructure that gives those models the right information at the right time.

With fresh international backing and plans to expand its engineering capabilities, the South African startup is now looking to turn that thesis into a scalable enterprise technology business.
