MTN Establishes Africa Data Hub to Accelerate AI and Data Centre Expansion

.

MTN Group has established a new company, Africa Data Hub Holding Limited, as the telecommunications giant accelerates its strategy to build data centres and AI infrastructure across key African markets.

The company was disclosed in MTN’s interim financial results for the six months ended June 30, 2026, with the group saying the new entity was created through a strategic partnership with a UAE-backed data-centre investment platform.

The partnership is expected to combine MTN’s extensive African infrastructure footprint with international capital and specialist expertise in developing and operating data-centre infrastructure.

MTN Bets on Africa’s AI Infrastructure Demand

The creation of Africa Data Hub comes as MTN increasingly positions itself beyond traditional telecommunications.

The group believes the next phase of Africa’s digital economy will require significantly more computing infrastructure as businesses, governments and consumers adopt artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other data-intensive services.

Rather than simply providing the connectivity that links users to digital services, MTN wants to play a larger role in providing the infrastructure required to run those services.

Nigeria and South Africa have emerged as priority markets for the group’s data-centre and AI infrastructure strategy.

Nigeria’s Data Centre Capacity Expands

In Nigeria, MTN launched the first phase of the Sifiso Dabengwa Data Centre in Lagos in mid-2025.

The facility was described at launch as the largest data centre in West Africa, reflecting the growing importance of local computing infrastructure as demand for cloud and digital services increases.

MTN also operates data-centre infrastructure in South Africa, including facilities in Centurion and other locations.

The expansion of this footprint provides the group with an existing base from which to build a broader regional computing platform.

Strategy Has Been Developing Since 2025

MTN’s latest move follows several months of preparation.

In its 2025 full-year results released in March 2026, the company said its Digital Infrastructure business was preparing for a broader rollout of AI-enabled data centres and was in discussions with potential strategic partners.

The group has also been expanding the infrastructure that will be required to support rising data consumption.

MTN is targeting between 420,000 kilometres and 560,000 kilometres of fibre by 2030, while forecasting that data consumption across its markets could double before the end of the decade.

The combination of fibre, data centres and computing capacity forms a critical part of the infrastructure required for large-scale AI adoption.

From Telecom Towers to Distributed Computing

MTN’s ambitions also extend beyond traditional centralised data centres.

During the first half of 2026, its Digital Infrastructure business invested in ORAN Development Corporation, a company developing what it describes as a Distributed Compute Grid.

The technology is designed to potentially transform telecommunications sites into distributed high-performance computing locations.

Such infrastructure could support applications including agentic AI, generative AI inference and physical AI, bringing computing capacity closer to where data is generated and consumed.

The funding round involving ORAN Development Corporation also attracted major technology players, including NVIDIA, Cisco Investments, Nokia, AT&T and Telecom Italia.

The participation of these companies underlines the growing industry interest in distributed computing as AI workloads expand.

Why Compute Is Becoming the New Infrastructure Battle

The shift reflects a broader change in Africa’s digital infrastructure requirements.

As banks, governments, startups and large enterprises increasingly deploy AI and cloud-based applications, demand will rise for data centres, fibre networks, reliable electricity and computing resources located closer to users.

MTN already possesses an advantage that many infrastructure companies lack: operations across multiple African markets and a huge existing customer and network footprint.

The Africa Data Hub could provide a dedicated vehicle for turning that footprint into a larger regional data-centre and AI infrastructure business.

Competition Will Intensify

The opportunity, however, is unlikely to be uncontested.

Global cloud providers and data-centre operators are increasing investments in Africa as demand for local computing capacity grows.

MTN will therefore need to secure substantial investment, dependable power supplies, additional technical expertise and enough enterprise customers to make its infrastructure expansion commercially sustainable.

Speed will also be critical as AI adoption accelerates and businesses increasingly seek local infrastructure to reduce latency, improve data control and meet regulatory requirements.

The Bigger Picture

MTN’s creation of Africa Data Hub signals a strategic shift from being primarily a connectivity provider to becoming a broader digital infrastructure company.

The group is effectively positioning fibre, data centres and distributed computing as interconnected assets that can support Africa’s next generation of AI and cloud services.

If the strategy succeeds, MTN could leverage its existing African footprint to become a significant player in the continent’s emerging AI infrastructure market.

The immediate challenge is turning that ambition into operational capacity at scale building enough data centres, securing reliable power and connectivity, and attracting the customers needed to justify the investment.

For MTN, the race is no longer only about who can connect Africa. It is increasingly about who will provide the computing infrastructure that powers what Africa does online next.
