OpenAI is moving to end its model-supply agreement with Cursor, the AI-powered coding platform recently acquired by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, escalating the long-running business and legal tensions between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI said it has notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down its contract with Cursor, with direct access to OpenAI models scheduled to end on November 12, 2026.
The company said the proposed shutdown date gives Cursor the maximum notice allowed under its agreement, which contains a provision permitting termination following a change in corporate control.
SpaceX Acquisition Triggers Contract Review
The dispute follows SpaceX’s acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, in a deal valued at about $60 billion.
The all-stock transaction was announced in June and completed earlier in August, bringing Cursor into Musk’s broader technology portfolio and triggering the change-of-control provision in its agreement with OpenAI.
OpenAI said the decision was not based on an allegation that Cursor itself had breached its agreement.
Instead, the AI company pointed to its concerns about whether a Musk-owned company would continue to comply with OpenAI’s contractual requirements.
OpenAI said its experience with other companies controlled by Musk had contributed to its decision, particularly previous disputes involving X, formerly Twitter, and xAI.
OpenAI Cites Trust and Contract Compliance
OpenAI said large partnerships such as the one with SpaceX typically involve customised contracts designed to ensure that its technology is used within its terms of service and that safety requirements can be maintained at scale.
The company said its concerns are heightened by the growing capabilities of its AI systems and the need to ensure that partners remain accountable for how the technology is deployed.
According to OpenAI, its previous experience with Musk’s businesses gave it insufficient confidence that the technology would continue to be used within the agreed terms.
The company also cited the earlier dispute over OpenAI’s access to Twitter data following Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform.
OpenAI further pointed to testimony concerning the use of its model outputs in the development of xAI’s systems as part of the broader history influencing its decision.
Cursor Says OpenAI Models Power Small Share of Traffic
Cursor co-founder Michael Truell, who is now a SpaceX executive, responded to the announcement by saying the companies are discussing the issue.
Truell said OpenAI models account for approximately 5% of Cursor’s user traffic, suggesting that the loss of direct access may not fundamentally disrupt the platform’s operations.
Cursor already supports models from multiple AI providers, allowing developers to select different models within the coding environment.
The company has therefore positioned the dispute as a manageable issue rather than a threat to its entire service.
Anthropic Moves to Support Cursor
The development has also opened an opportunity for OpenAI’s competitors.
Anthropic, which has its own relationship with SpaceX, said it planned to increase computing resources to support its Claude models on Cursor following OpenAI’s announcement.
That response highlights the increasingly competitive market for AI coding tools, where developers can access models from multiple providers through a single platform.
For Cursor, the ability to work with several model providers could reduce its dependence on any single AI company and give users alternative options as the OpenAI agreement winds down.
Another Chapter in Musk-Altman Dispute
The Cursor decision adds another dimension to the long-running conflict between Musk and OpenAI.
Musk was an early backer and co-founder of OpenAI but later became one of its most prominent critics after the organisation shifted from its original nonprofit structure toward a for-profit model.
He sued OpenAI and Altman, alleging that the company had abandoned its founding mission.
A federal jury ruled against Musk earlier this year, with the case involving claims surrounding OpenAI’s transition and Musk’s allegations against its leadership. Musk has indicated that he intends to appeal.
Following OpenAI’s announcement on Cursor, Musk dismissed the move publicly and renewed his criticism of Altman and OpenAI leadership.
AI Model Access Becomes Strategic Battleground
The dispute underscores a broader shift in the AI industry.
As model providers increasingly depend on partnerships with application developers, ownership changes can become strategically important. Companies that build products around third-party AI models may find themselves exposed when their relationships with model providers change.
For Cursor, the immediate impact is limited by its multi-model approach and the relatively small share of traffic attributed to OpenAI.
For OpenAI, however, the decision reinforces its effort to exercise tighter control over how its increasingly capable models are distributed and used.
Unless the two sides reach a new agreement, Cursor’s direct access to OpenAI models will end on November 12, 2026, while future models, including OpenAI’s forthcoming Astra system, will not be supplied to the platform under the current arrangement.
