Banking Stocks Lift NGX by ₦288 Billion Despite Widespread Sell-Off

.

Nigeria’s equities market opened the new trading month on a positive note, with gains in major banking stocks helping investors add ₦288.44 billion in market value despite a broader wave of selling across several sectors of the market.

Trading on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Monday saw the benchmark All-Share Index (ASI) rise by 0.18% to close at 245,730.53 points, up from 245,283.68 points recorded in the previous session. As a result, the market capitalisation increased to ₦158.61 trillion, compared with ₦158.33 trillion at the close of the last trading day. The market’s year-to-date return also improved to 57.91%, while the month-to-date return stood at 0.18%, reflecting a positive start to August trading.

Banking Stocks Offset Weakness in Other Sectors

The day’s gains were largely driven by renewed investor demand for heavyweight banking stocks, particularly First HoldCo and United Bank for Africa (UBA), whose strong performances outweighed losses recorded in the insurance and consumer goods sectors.

Although the market closed higher, investor sentiment remained cautious as declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones. Market breadth finished in negative territory, with 24 equities posting gains against 38 decliners, highlighting that the overall rally was concentrated in a handful of large-cap stocks rather than being broad-based.

Trading Activity Remains Mixed

Market data showed mixed trading performance during the session.

A total of 923.01 million shares changed hands, representing a 2.12% decline in trading volume compared to the previous session. The value of transactions also fell by 19.02% to ₦37.85 billion.

Despite the lower trading volume and value, investor participation improved significantly, with the number of completed deals rising by 30.76% to 72,544 transactions, indicating sustained market activity.

Financial Stocks Continue to Support Market Recovery

The latest performance reinforces the banking sector’s growing influence on the Nigerian stock market, particularly following its strong rebound in July.

Analysts note that investors continue to accumulate fundamentally strong banking stocks, supported by expectations of robust corporate earnings, attractive dividend prospects and improved profitability across the sector. Banking counters were among the biggest contributors to the market’s recovery in July after rebounding from the profit-taking witnessed in June.

Insurance, Consumer Goods Weigh on Sentiment

While banking stocks provided support, selling pressure remained visible across several other sectors.

Insurance and consumer goods stocks recorded notable declines, limiting the overall market advance and contributing to the negative market breadth.

The mixed sectoral performance suggests investors are becoming increasingly selective, rotating capital into fundamentally strong large-cap companies while taking profits in other segments of the market.

Outlook Remains Positive

Despite the broad sell-off, the market’s ability to close in positive territory signals continued confidence in Nigeria’s banking sector and other blue-chip stocks.

Market analysts expect investors to remain focused on ongoing corporate earnings releases, dividend expectations and macroeconomic developments as they assess investment opportunities in the weeks ahead.

With banking stocks continuing to provide momentum, attention will now shift to whether the sector can sustain the rally and help the broader market maintain its upward trajectory through August.
