Nigerian autonomous-systems company Terra Industries has appointed former SpaceX executive Ben MacWilliams as its Vice President of Strategy, bringing an executive with extensive experience expanding Starlink across Africa into the continent’s emerging defence-technology sector.
The appointment, announced on August 19, 2026, comes as Terra Industries moves to expand its autonomous defence systems beyond Nigeria and build a broader African presence.
MacWilliams previously played a key role in Starlink’s market-access strategy in Africa, working with governments, regulators and telecommunications authorities to secure approvals that enabled the satellite internet service to enter more than 20 African countries.
His move to Terra marks a shift from satellite connectivity to autonomous defence technology, but retains a common thread: navigating complex regulatory environments to deploy advanced technology across African markets.
Terra Targets Autonomous Defence Systems
Founded in 2024 by Nathan Nwachuku and Maxwell Maduka, Terra Industries is developing an integrated portfolio of autonomous systems designed for governments and operators of critical infrastructure.
Its products include Archer, a long-range surveillance drone; Kama, an interceptor drone; Kallon, a solar-powered surveillance tower; and Druma, an autonomous ground robot.
The company also operates ArtemisOS, software designed to connect and coordinate its autonomous systems.
Rather than positioning itself solely as a drone manufacturer, Terra is seeking to provide an integrated technology platform for monitoring and protecting borders, energy facilities, mining operations and other strategic assets.
The company says its systems are already being used to protect critical infrastructure valued at approximately $11 billion, particularly across the mining and energy industries.
MacWilliams Brings African Market Experience
For Terra, MacWilliams’ appointment provides more than executive experience. His previous work at SpaceX gave him direct exposure to the regulatory and political complexities involved in deploying advanced technology across multiple African markets.
At Starlink, he was involved in securing operating permissions and market access while engaging with presidents, ministers, telecommunications regulators and other government officials.
That experience could prove valuable as Terra seeks to expand into markets where defence technology is subject to considerably more stringent regulatory, procurement and national-security requirements.
Unlike commercial telecommunications, autonomous defence systems can involve government procurement rules, security clearances, export restrictions and arms-control considerations.
$52m Funding Provides Expansion Capital
MacWilliams joins Terra at a time when the startup is also significantly increasing its financial firepower.
The company recently closed a $52 million seed round, including an additional $18 million tranche announced this week.
The funding attracted backing from investors including 8VC, Lux Capital, Valor Equity Partners and SV Angel.
The capital is expected to support the company’s manufacturing capacity and expansion into additional markets.
The combination of fresh funding and an executive familiar with African market expansion gives Terra a stronger platform as it attempts to move from an early-stage Nigerian startup into a larger continental defence-technology company.
Building African Alternatives to Imported Defence Technology
Terra’s ambitions come against the backdrop of Africa’s longstanding dependence on imported military and security technologies.
Governments across the continent have historically sourced defence equipment and surveillance systems from international suppliers, including manufacturers in China, Russia and Europe.
Terra is instead advocating greater African ownership of the hardware, software and data used to protect critical infrastructure and national assets.
That proposition is becoming increasingly relevant as governments pay closer attention to cybersecurity, surveillance capabilities, supply-chain vulnerabilities and control over sensitive national-security information.
The company’s model also reflects a wider movement towards locally developed technology designed around African operating conditions.
From Connectivity to Defence Technology
MacWilliams’ transition from SpaceX to Terra also illustrates how expertise developed during Africa’s connectivity expansion is beginning to spread into other technology sectors.
The rapid rollout of satellite internet, mobile infrastructure and digital services across the continent has created a pool of professionals experienced in regulatory negotiations, government relations and deploying complex technologies in challenging markets.
Terra is now attempting to apply some of that expertise to defence technology.
The Road Ahead
Terra’s immediate challenge will be converting its strong funding position and growing technology portfolio into a sustainable pan-African business.
MacWilliams will have to navigate a regulatory landscape considerably different from the telecommunications sector while helping Terra secure government contracts and approvals in multiple countries.
His experience helping Starlink enter more than 20 African markets could nevertheless provide an important advantage.
If Terra succeeds, its growth could signal more than the rise of another African startup. It could demonstrate that locally developed autonomous defence technologies can attract significant international investment, talent and attention while offering African governments alternatives to imported security systems.
