The MTN Nigeria Foundation says it has invested more than ₦34 billion in social-impact programmes, funding over 54 projects that have reached more than 33 million Nigerians across thousands of communities and local councils.
The disclosure underscores the growing scale of corporate social investment in Nigeria, with the foundation positioning education, capacity building, healthcare and empowerment as key areas of its intervention.
The Executive Secretary of the MTN Nigeria Foundation, Odunayo Sanya, disclosed the figures at the closing ceremony of the 2026 MTN-SAIL Teachers Fellowship, where 5,000 teachers completed the latest phase of the programme.
According to Sanya, the foundation’s broader interventions have reached 3,500 communities, 590 schools and local councils, reflecting a strategy that extends beyond one-off donations towards programmes designed to build skills and improve access to opportunities.
₦207m committed to teacher development
Education is emerging as one of the major components of the foundation’s social-investment strategy.
Sanya revealed that more than ₦207 million has been invested in the MTN-SAIL Teachers Fellowship since 2024, with 8,704 teachers impacted during that period.
The fellowship operates in two phases and has reached teachers from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, with training focused on helping teachers adapt to changing classroom demands and the increasing role of technology in education.
The foundation said its wider social programmes are organised around capacity building, health and empowerment, with two broad operational portfolios covering national priorities and youth empowerment.
Focus shifts towards digital-ready classrooms
The MTN Foundation chairman, Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, represented at the event by foundation director Simon Aranonu, emphasised the importance of teachers in shaping Nigeria’s future workforce.
“The future of the nation is present in the classrooms long before it is reflected in its boardrooms, laboratories or government offices,” Belo-Olusoga said.
She described teachers as “among the most important architects of our future,” arguing that their influence extends beyond academic instruction to shaping communities and developing future professionals.
The fellowship has therefore expanded beyond conventional teaching techniques.
According to the foundation, participating educators receive training in inquiry-based learning, learner-centred approaches, digital pedagogy and emerging technologies, including Google Classroom and artificial intelligence applications.
The objective is to equip teachers to create classrooms where students can develop critical-thinking and innovation skills while preparing for a more technology-driven economy.
More than 10,000 teachers trained since 2022
SAIL Empowerment Foundation co-founder Feyisola Abiru said the initiative began in 2022 and has now trained more than 10,000 public-school teachers across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.
She described teachers as the “most critical link between education policy and the Nigerian child.”
The latest cohort consisted entirely of public-school teachers, reflecting SAIL’s focus on the segment of the education system serving a large proportion of Nigerian children.
The partnership therefore goes beyond providing equipment or infrastructure by targeting the people responsible for delivering instruction inside classrooms.

Recognition for outstanding participants
The closing ceremony also recognised exceptional participants in the programme.
Three outstanding graduates received a new laptop and laptop bag each from the SAIL Empowerment Foundation for demonstrating exceptional commitment and applying the training in their classrooms.
Belo-Olusoga urged the graduating teachers to take their knowledge back to their schools and communities.
“Take what you have learned, share it with your colleagues and continue to challenge your students to think bigger and believe that all things are possible,” she told the teachers.
Beyond CSR: building human capital
The latest figures place MTN Foundation’s activities within a broader conversation around how major companies contribute to social and economic development beyond their core commercial operations.
Corporate social responsibility increasingly encompasses programmes that address education, employability, healthcare, digital inclusion and community development.
