Nigerian Startups Pull $364.1m in August as Moove’s $250m Mega-Round Sparks Funding Rebound

.

Nigeria’s startup ecosystem recorded a dramatic rebound in August 2026, attracting $364.1 million across 20 disclosed deals and accounting for more than four-fifths of all startup funding raised across Africa during the month.

Data analysed by Nairametrics from The Big Deal shows that Nigerian startups captured 83.66% of the continent’s $435.2 million disclosed funding pool, placing the country significantly ahead of other major African technology markets.

The performance was largely driven by a single mega-round from mobility technology company Moove, whose $250 million Series C financing accounted for more than half of Africa’s total startup funding for the month.

Moove Drives Nigeria’s Funding Surge

Moove’s $250 million Series C emerged as the defining transaction behind August’s funding rebound.

The round valued the mobility company at $2.1 billion and was led by Mubadala Investment Company, with Woven Capital, Toyota’s Growth Fund, and Ion Pacific co-leading the transaction.

The company said the capital will support the expansion of its autonomous vehicle business, including autonomous fleet ownership and the development of robotics-focused depot infrastructure known as “Nests”.

Moove also plans to use the funds to support new market launches globally.

The size of the transaction significantly altered Nigeria’s monthly funding picture, demonstrating how one large late-stage round can substantially influence ecosystem-wide statistics.

As Nairametrics’ analysis shows, logistics and transport attracted $263 million during the month, representing 60.43% of Africa’s total disclosed startup funding. Moove’s transaction accounted for the overwhelming majority of that sector’s capital.

Funding Rises Despite Fewer Deals

August’s rebound was notable not only for the amount raised but also because it came despite a decline in deal activity.

African startups collectively raised $435.2 million across 32 deals, compared with $102.2 million across 47 deals in July. The result represents a 325.8% month-on-month increase in funding value, even as the number of transactions fell.

The year-on-year improvement was equally significant.

August 2025 recorded $111.3 million in startup funding, excluding M&A transactions, meaning August 2026’s $435.2 million represents a 291% increase in disclosed funding value.

However, the numbers also reveal an important caveat: capital became considerably more concentrated.

The continent’s top 10 startups raised $428 million, representing 98.35% of the month’s total funding. In July, the top 10 accounted for 86.94% of funding.

Nigeria Widens Its Lead

Nigeria’s $364.1 million haul was almost four times the combined funding secured by all other African markets during August.

Egypt followed with $36.2 million across four deals, representing 8.32% of continental funding, while South Africa attracted $31.6 million from four deals, accounting for 7.26%.

Côte d’Ivoire recorded $1.5 million, while Kenya and Uganda attracted $1 million and $800,000 respectively.

At the regional level, Western Africa dominated with $365.6 million across 21 deals, or 84.01% of the continental total. Nigeria alone contributed almost all of that amount.

Fintech Still Attracts Major Capital

Although Moove shifted the funding spotlight towards logistics and transport, fintech remained a significant destination for investor capital.

The sector attracted $87.7 million across eight deals, accounting for 20.15% of Africa’s disclosed startup funding in August.

Retail followed with $51 million across two deals, while deeptech secured $19.5 million from three deals.

Education and jobs recorded the highest number of deals among the smaller sectors, with 12 transactions generating $9.6 million.

The figures highlight a key feature of Africa’s venture market: deal volume does not necessarily translate into funding value. Education and jobs had more deals than logistics and transport, but the latter attracted vastly more capital because of Moove’s mega-round.

What the Rebound Means for Nigeria

The August figures offer a significant boost to Nigeria’s startup ecosystem after a relatively challenging fundraising environment earlier in 2026.

Nigerian startups raised $184.7 million across 51 deals in the first half of the year, with fintech accounting for $98.5 million, or more than half of the total.

However, July was particularly weak across Africa, with just $102.2 million raised, highlighting how selective investors had become.

August’s performance therefore signals renewed investor appetite, but the concentration of capital suggests that funding remains unevenly distributed.

For founders, the message is clear: large, proven companies with scalable business models are attracting substantial institutional capital, while smaller startups continue to compete for a much narrower pool of venture funding.

Nigeria’s August performance consequently represents both a funding rebound and a reminder of how concentrated Africa’s startup investment market has become.

With Moove’s $250 million transaction doing much of the heavy lifting, the next test for the ecosystem will be whether the momentum can extend beyond a handful of mega-deals into broader and more consistent funding for startups across different stages and sectors.
