Nigerian Stocks Rebound After Two-Week Slide as September Brings Fresh Market Catalysts

.

Nigeria’s equities market staged a late-August recovery after two consecutive weeks of losses, but investors are entering September with a mix of renewed optimism and caution as global index reclassification and monetary-policy developments could reshape market direction.

The rebound came amid significant swings in Open Market Operations (OMO), which had contributed to liquidity shifts and selling pressure across the equities market.

After the recent correction, investors returned to selected large-cap stocks, helping the market regain some lost ground toward the end of August.

Market Recovers as Blue-Chip Buying Returns

The recovery became more pronounced in the final trading sessions of August, with investors increasing positions in major banking, consumer and telecommunications stocks.

On Monday, August 31, the NGX All-Share Index rose 1.20% to 244,199.39 points, while market capitalisation increased by approximately N1.91 trillion to N157.74 trillion.

The stronger session pushed the market’s year-to-date return to 56.93%, although August still ended with a modest monthly decline of about 0.44%.

The latest performance suggests that investors were willing to return to equities after several sessions of profit-taking and weakness.

Banking Stocks Lead the Recovery

Financial stocks were among the strongest contributors to the latest rebound.

The NGX Banking Index gained 3.11% on August 31, with Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), Access Holdings, Zenith Bank, UBA and GTCO among the major gainers.

ETI advanced 8.98%, while Access Holdings gained 8.81%. Zenith Bank rose 5.29%, UBA added 3.16% and GTCO increased 3.10%.

Outside banking, Nigerian Breweries gained 8.07%, PZ Cussons Nigeria rose 7.86%, while MTN Nigeria advanced 4.26%. Aradel Holdings and Oando also recorded gains.

The breadth of Monday’s rally also improved, with 43 stocks gaining against 16 decliners, indicating that buying interest had spread beyond a handful of large-cap counters.

FTSE Russell Reclassification Could Change September Outlook

One of the biggest catalysts entering September is Nigeria’s return to FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market classification.

FTSE Russell has confirmed that Nigeria will move from “Unclassified” back to Frontier Market status on September 21, 2026.

The reclassification follows improvements in the country’s market infrastructure, including the successful transition to T+1 settlement, with FTSE Russell finding no material settlement, operational or funding problems.

Nigeria was previously removed from the classification after foreign-exchange and repatriation challenges made it difficult for international investors to move funds efficiently.

The return could increase the visibility of Nigerian equities among international investors and potentially support fresh portfolio inflows.

Major stocks such as MTN Nigeria, GTCO and Zenith Bank are among the Nigerian companies that could attract renewed attention as international funds adjust portfolios around the reclassification.

September Could Test the Strength of the Rally

Despite the positive close to August, the market’s recovery has not completely erased concerns created by the earlier sell-off.

Investors are likely to monitor whether the renewed buying interest can continue after the initial enthusiasm surrounding Nigeria’s FTSE Russell status.

The recent rally also came against a backdrop of significant liquidity movements caused by the CBN’s OMO operations and elevated yields in the fixed-income market.

With government securities offering relatively attractive returns, equities must continue to demonstrate strong earnings prospects and valuation opportunities to compete effectively for investor capital.

Trading Activity Picks Up

The August 31 session also showed stronger participation.

Trading volume rose slightly to about 606.19 million shares, while market turnover increased 29.56% to N38.70 billion.

The number of deals jumped 39.17% to 53,471, suggesting that the recovery was accompanied by increased market activity rather than being driven solely by isolated transactions.

Access Holdings accounted for the largest share volume, while MTN Nigeria recorded the highest traded value during the session.

Investors Face a New September Test

The Nigerian equities market enters September from a stronger position than it occupied earlier in August, but the coming weeks could determine whether the recent rebound develops into another sustained rally.

The September 21 FTSE Russell reclassification provides a potentially important catalyst, while movements in interest rates, liquidity conditions and investor positioning will remain critical.

The key question is whether renewed foreign and domestic interest can broaden beyond major banking and blue-chip stocks and produce a more durable recovery across the NGX.

For now, the market has recovered sharply from its August weakness, but September is likely to determine whether the rebound represents a temporary bounce or the beginning of another sustained phase of bullish activity.
