Nigeria is positioning itself for a bigger role in Africa’s emerging 5G market as the continent’s fifth-generation mobile connections are projected to exceed 380 million by 2030, according to the latest GSMA Intelligence outlook.
The report, “5G in Africa 2026: Market Status, Trends and Outlook,” shows that Africa’s 5G rollout is gathering momentum, although adoption remains significantly behind the global pace.
Globally, more than 390 5G networks are now operational across nearly 160 countries, with worldwide connections expected to reach 3.4 billion by the end of 2026, representing about 37 per cent of all mobile connections.
Africa’s 5G Adoption Still at Early Stage
As of May 2026, 61 operators across 37 African markets had launched commercial 5G services, while 40 operators were also offering fixed wireless access (FWA).
Despite the growing number of deployments, fewer than 100 million 5G connections are expected across Africa by the end of 2026, equivalent to about 6.2 per cent of the continent’s mobile connections.
The GSMA expects adoption to accelerate considerably over the remainder of the decade, with connections projected to rise above 380 million by 2030, accounting for slightly more than one-fifth of Africa’s mobile base.
Nigeria Builds Ambitious Spectrum Strategy
Nigeria is emerging as one of the continent’s more ambitious 5G markets, having already assigned spectrum in the 2600MHz, 3500MHz and 3700MHz bands.
The country is also preparing to license 26GHz millimetre-wave spectrum between 2026 and 2028, targeting enterprise applications and localised high-capacity use cases.
The strategy places Nigeria among the African markets preparing to deploy high-band 5G, while many other countries continue to concentrate on mid-band frequencies that offer a more practical balance between coverage and deployment costs.
However, Nigeria’s ambitions have yet to translate into mass adoption.
By the end of 2026, 5G is expected to account for only about 15 per cent of Nigeria’s total mobile connections, compared with projected adoption rates of 56 per cent in Morocco and 35 per cent in Mauritius.
Coverage Remains Concentrated
Nigeria’s 5G coverage is still largely concentrated in major urban centres, particularly Lagos and Abuja, leaving many rural communities dependent on older 2G and 3G networks.
The GSMA said Nigeria is also exploring low-band massive MIMO deployments, which could improve network efficiency in densely populated areas.
Beyond consumer connectivity, the country is looking to enterprise applications to strengthen the commercial case for 5G. Industries such as oil and gas, mining and logistics are expected to be important beneficiaries of the technology.
The planned 26GHz rollout could also support private networks and industrial automation, aligning 5G deployment with Nigeria’s wider digital-economy ambitions.
Fixed Wireless Access Emerges as Key Driver
Across Africa, fixed wireless access is becoming an important route for monetising 5G infrastructure.
About 40 African networks currently offer FWA services, providing wireless broadband to homes and businesses. Connections are expected to increase from fewer than one million currently to about 3.5 million by 2030.
Falling equipment prices are helping the market. Customer-premises equipment has declined to below $80, from more than $200 several years ago, while operators are increasingly subsidising routers through bundled service packages.
South Africa currently leads the continent in fixed-mobile convergence, with operators offering integrated mobile and home broadband services. Nigeria is expected to move further in that direction as equipment and service prices become more affordable.
Affordability Threatens Mass Adoption
Despite the progress, affordability remains one of the biggest obstacles to widespread 5G adoption.
Entry-level 5G smartphones still cost more than $100, putting compatible devices beyond the immediate reach of many consumers.
The GSMA said subsidies, financing options and tax incentives could help reduce the cost barrier, while operators are expected to explore bundled offers and other pricing strategies.
FWA could also provide an alternative route to broadband access, particularly for households and businesses that cannot easily obtain fixed broadband connections.
Policy and Infrastructure Critical to Success
The GSMA stressed that governments and telecommunications operators will need to work together to unlock the full economic potential of 5G in Africa.
Policy incentives, infrastructure sharing and spectrum refarming are expected to play important roles in lowering deployment costs and accelerating coverage.
For operators, the focus will increasingly shift from simply deploying networks to finding commercially sustainable use cases, particularly through FWA, enterprise services and specialised industrial applications.
Nigeria’s Next Challenge
For Nigeria, the immediate challenge is converting its ambitious spectrum strategy into broader coverage and meaningful adoption.
Expanding beyond Lagos and Abuja, improving affordability, refarming existing spectrum and developing enterprise applications will determine whether the country can translate its early 5G ambitions into a sustainable competitive advantage.
With Africa’s 5G connections expected to exceed 380 million by 2030, the next four years could prove decisive. Nigeria has positioned itself near the centre of the continent’s 5G push, but infrastructure costs, device affordability and the ability to generate sufficient commercial value will determine whether that ambition becomes reality.
